For the Evelyn Wood impaired, it's been edited. Joanie rocks! ******************************************************************* It had been a long time since my last show...November in Hershey to be exact. And a lot had changed since PA in '98. I do not feel like the same person. But here it was, the second day of May, and Joan was playing just across New York Harbor. First stop in Jersey: Hoboken. Once the trains carried workers to their jobs in downtown New York from working class Hoboken, a tiny town with lots of factories, like Maxwell House and Campbell Soup, and later on, known for being the birthplace of the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra. (Every band I know from Hoboken can do at least one passable Sinatra cover, without irony). In the economic boom of the 80s, lots of newly-rich yuppies craved beautiful harbor views, and the PATH train brought gentrification and development, driving out many longtime residents, and creating an uneasy relationship between the old-timers and the newbies, buying out blocks, driving out small businesses...I have friends who grew up in Hoboken who can no longer afford to live there. But there's a Barnes & Noble, innumerable coffee bars and fashionable cafes, boutiques, and an internet cafe. It still has its scene with local bands, and family restaurants hanging on in crevices, and you can take a taxi for about $3 from the PATH to Maxwell's to hear some pretty good music. I got off the PATH train at a little after 1, and it was only a short walk to the portable stage. The Jersey Jettheads and the Allentown Jettheads, along with the Jettheads from Queens all arrived, bearing horror stories about the traffic and the tunnel. There was no soundcheck, but the instruments were set up, waiting for the band...tho the longtime roadcrew member sometimes nicknamed Mr. Goldenhair was nowhere in sight, his tasks taken over by other roadies. We waited impatiently for the show to start...It was a little after 5, and I worried that the band would have to stop at a set time (which proved to be the case). But finally, to a version of The Jet Song from West Side Story, they took the stage... excellent music to take the stage to, if you ask me. It was an edited, but powerful set. Joan sprang through the usual opening numbers, with an energy that echoed the crowd. It was cool enough she didn't break a sweat, but she put her all into getting the crowd going, which they were anxious to do. Of the newer material, we heard Friend to Friend, Androgynous, Fetish, Baby Blue, and Fetish. While Joan played the XXX version of Fetish, she didn't do the "fuck you-fuck me-fuck everybody" version of "Touch." It was a crowded stage...along with the Blackhearts, Kenny popped back and forth on and off, pointing out videotapers in the crowd to the cops. Blackheart seemed to be shooting the show with a still photographer. To one side were Kate Schellenbach, the drummer for Luscious Jackson, along with Karyn Kuhl of Sexpod, the both of them rocking out. Various dignitaries made their way through the door to watch for a moment, then be escorted away. The setup of the stage let Joan get past the monitors and stand on the front speakers, which she frequently did. During Androgynous, she held her hand out to a little girl, propped on her dad's shoulders...the kid couldn't have been more than three or so. The child grabbed Joan's hand and squealed with delight. Harley & the LilEvilOne, who were sitting on top of the first row of chairs, reported that the brouhaha that developed during Fetish was two women getting into a brawl that threatened to spread when a guy intervened. That's when the Hoboken cops came flooding over the barrier, through the crowd. The fight was pretty well contained tho, with no ripple effect of the sort that leaves you pressed into the barrier with up-and-down bruises on your legs for days. That was pretty much the only sour note in a high-spirited but friendly crowd. I couldn't see how far back it went, but from the sound of things, it was several thousand people packed into the street, stretching back about three blocks. Too soon (less than an hour, in fact) the set was over...the permit must have only permitted them to go until 6 o'clock. The crowd didn't want Joan to leave...she didn't seem to want to leave either. During "Touch" she applauded the "Oh Yeahs" and while she wasn't in front of the mic, anyone could read the FUCKIN A HOBOKEN! YEAH! on her lips at the end of the song. But six o'clock came and the Blackhearts went, to the tune of "My Generation." The crowd dispersed pretty quickly, as a bunch of us caught up with each other and enjoyed the buzz. Then the entire crowd sitting in front of the bar across the street raised its glasses and gave a huge cheer. Joan shot both hands up in the air and waved back at them, grinning.
