Personally, I think that it's a fault of two parties: the producers who sign the bands, and the bands themselves. Here's my point--the producers sign up the "Flavor of the Month" or whatever, no matter how preposterous: glam rock, electronica, grunge, what have you. The reason why they sign up that band is usually because of one catchy single that the band comes up with, that prescribes close enough to that Flavor that the producer is looking for. Then the band is marketed in that certain direction for the release of their "long awaited and anticipated first album from a breakthrough group of musicians." That single sells well, as the producer expected. But something unexpected(yet just as predictable) happens...the Flavor-ful sound is not consistent. Since the band is usually young, and not as experienced as a band that has been experiencing average success over the past few years as opposed to great success in the past few months, they lack cohesiveness. Their next album is not as "poppy," "deep," or "trip-hoppy" etc. as the last one, and the critics bomb the band. The producers ball out the musicians, tempers are strained, and someone walks out. In the second scenario, the bands that get signed up don't do enough research themselves as to why the producer is signing them up in the first place; it's obvious that the producer wants them to fill into a mold, but since they're set up with a rich recording contract they take it anyway and compromise their talent to keep the checks coming in. Then they backlash on their producer when the critics give their second release the dump, and negativity spreads, and solo projects are born. The "band" disintegrates into not even a memo on the liner notes. PLEASE NOTE that I'm not implicating a certain band in particular; I think that this is a legitimate impression of today's music scene. I know this sound bitter, cynical, catcher-in-the-rye-ish, and antagonistic, but I really think that this illustrates a lot of what is going on today, not only in the music world, but in other realms as well. Flame me if you will. I'm ready. ;D - --Steve/Artaud Jr. - --part0_901164661_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 23:39:56 -0400 From: freaker Subject: kate interview and my ramblings... here is a really good interview with kate appearing in today's issue of allstar mag...or half an interview...notice...what we say...the band hears...:) look we are good for something! :) the petra haden thing...hmm that should make a number of lj fans (sarah, peter, and i to name some) quite happy...petra should sing too...in fact...i think the haden triplets (petra, rachel & tanya) should all contribute...but i'm just dreaming...hmm...so who else would you all like to see collaborate with lj in some way shape or form? just popping into my head at the moment....kelli dayton (formerly of sneaker pimps), dominique durand (ivy), theo (lunachicks) um...then the way out there ideas...ani difranco or dar williams perhaps dayna manning or kacy crowley (who i've been listening to a lot of lately...and met last week at lilith...my god what a sweet woman..she deserves to gain fame)...(some folky chick like that :) ) erm...perhaps some drumming from patty schemel (hole...or maybe not any longer)...um some of the folks from the prissteens...oh and i forgot...the murmurs!!!! who have a new album coming out early august...yay...i'd esp like to see leisha hailey work with lj...:) yayayayay...hmm...speaking of collaborations...anyone know what ever became of that session with ari up from x-ray spex? ok i'll shut my blabbering at the moment and go back to trying to fix the script for a new message board...okay...started taking new medications today...its already making me crazy....lalala...later... sara http://listen.to/lusciousjackson read on.... LUSCIOUS JACKSON DRUMMER DESCRIBES DIVERSITY OF NEW ALBUM Part One Of A Two-Part Interview While Luscious Jackson drummer Kate Schellenbach says the material for the group's next album is "still in the vein of danceable pop," she also says that the band is adding in some salsa, '60s pop surf sounds, and a bit of a "space theme" as well. "It's got a good-time vibe and is happier than the last album," Schellenbach tells us. "Nothing's completed, though. We started 10 songs and we're working with a few different producers -- Tony Manguarian, who's worked with us since the first record, and Mickey P., he's a hip-hop guy, and [guitarist/ vocalist] Gabby [Glaser] is working with Tony Visconti." When asked how it feels working without keyboardist Vivian Trimble, who left the band in April (allstar, April 3), Schellenbach says, "First, I know a lot of our fans on the Web want to know what the real story is. Well, there's no real story, except that she didn't want to tour and didn't like the band lifestyle. It wasn't like she grew up wanting to be in bands, like the rest of us. Vivian is coming from a different place. She's more into performance art and the dance world. I think she had no idea [Luscious Jackson] would take over her life. "We miss her as a friend," she continues. "But she seems more happy to be home and settled and working on her own stuff. She's looking to do stuff with soundtracks." At the moment, the band has no plans to replace her permanently. For now, Glaser has taken over Trimble's keyboard duties in the studio. And while the album is still in its early, early stages (it won't be released until the first quarter of 1999), there are already some special guests and talk of more. "Petra Haden plays violin on the record," says Schellenbach. "And we're looking to find guest vocalists, but nothing's confirmed. We wouldn't mind getting to work with Emmylou Harris again. It's all yet to be determined. "We're big New York Liberty fans too," Schellenbach adds of the WNBA basketball team. "And some of them sing. Kym Hampton, their center, is the main one, so we want to contact Liberty to see if those girls would lend their voices, but they're busy right now. Who knows who else... Chris Stein? Deborah Harry? Collaborating is wonderful." Tia Sprocket, one of the band's touring members, also played some percussion on the album. Schellenbach mentions Stein and Harry not only because she's a big-time Blondie fan, but because she recently played with them at Joey Ramone's Cyberbash '98 during the Intel New York Music Festival at Tramps on Friday (July 17). (allstar, July 21). Of that experience, Schellenbach says, "It was totally a dream come true. It lends truth to the thought that if you put info out there, eventually - -- it may be 20 years later -- your dreams can come true. The only thing that would've made it better is if I was in the audience and they pulled me out and onstage -- that was my teenage fantasy." How it actually happened was that Harry got Schellenbach's number from Theo in the Lunachicks, and called Schellenbach to ask if she was available. "It was a shocking and exciting phone call," she admits. "I hope we'll do something in the future and maybe we'll snag them for something for us." When asked who else she'd like to drum with, she a answers, "Aerosmith!" Meanwhile, she's also laying down drum tracks for one of Trimble's two projects, Dusty Trails. "I'm basically a hired gun." While there isn't a title for the new Luscious disc yet, Schellenbach says an online fan had posted that it would be called Luscious Jackson 4, to which she replies, "We'll consider it, as much as we'll consider everything else. We see a lot of suggestions online." - -Carrie Borzillo __________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 06:12:48 -0700 From: "Canyon Man" Subject: Tony Visconti working w/ LJ >>>and [guitarist/ vocalist] Gabby [Glaser] is working >>>with Tony Visconti." Wow! Tony Visconti? He's one of the finest producers around. He worked on a lot of the classic mid-'70s David Bowie stuff, he's produced the Moody Blues, and he's also partnered w/ a personal favorite of mine, Annie Haslam, who has recorded solo for quite some time, but who is best known for her work w/ the band Renaissance. I can only imagine how great the Visconti/Glaser collaboration will be. Now, I'm definitely psyched! Hmmm... and Gabby's doing the studio keyboards? That may also be cool, as she did some Fender Rhodes work on Natural Ingredients. I like that analog keyboard kinda sound better than synths, but whatever instruments LJ decide to employ, you know it'll be awesome. Thanks, Kate Schellenbach, for doing that interview! Hudak" Subject: Dream Collaborations Pt. II A'ight, so folks are talkin' 'bout who they would like to see LJ hook up with musically. As I've said before, Nile Rodgers is still on the top of my list. I would also like to see LJ do a tune with Tjinder Singh of Cornershop -- that would be kinda neat: a sorta Punjabi-flavored LJ. Aaaaannnd, when it comes time for LJ ta do a 12" remix of some of their tunes, I think Roni Size would bring a kick-ass sound into the fold. On a more experimental note, I think it would be interesting to put Laurie Anderson & Lou Reed ('cause ya know the two have been dating) with the LJ ladies into a room and start 'em talkin' about art. I wonder if LJ ever thought about branching off into other mediums like installation pieces, etc. ?? It could be mighty interesting. Lou and Laurie always have the best ideas, so to get everyone talkin' over some drinks would be a dream. [Hmmm, I wonder what Velvet Underground song(s) LJ has covered in their time -- 'cause you know EVERYONE does a VU tune at one point or another. (Any guesses?)] All I can say is -- if such a meeting of the minds took place, I would beg to be there. Oh, and of course -- Joni Mitchell, my goddess. Joni probably would hook up wit' LJ...Joni would tweak with da ladies' lyrics and make up exquisitely Mitchellesque. Image Joni lyrics and LJ vibe -- that could be intoxicating. Hell, or even vice versa! A'ight, I'm outta here. Gonna go off and dream some more about possible LJ collaborations. Oh, like hearing Stevie Nicks and Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission singing backup for 'em!! Yeeeeeahhhh........ Kris P.S. -- What's the deal with Kate and a tattoo? Does she have one, and more importantly -- where is it located?? Hmmmm. As previously reported, the Suffragette Sessions Tour (allstar, July 10) will feature a a bunch of female artists -- Indigo Girls' Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, Schellenbach, Gail Ann Dorsey, Jane Siberry, Lourdes Perez, Lisa Germano, Mecca Normal's Jean Smith, Come's Thalia Zedek, and Josephine Wiggs, formerly of the Breeders -- performing together. Shonen Knife are the opening act for the show. "I'm the drummer for the whole thing," explains Schellenbach. "How it works is, everyone's on a roster, there's 11 musicians who pick two to three songs they want to do, and you pick among the people on the list. Like, I want Josephine to play stand-up bass and Ann Wilson to sing backup and so on." Schellenbach says tapes are being sent out to participants, and then the group has three days of rehearsals planned before the 12-city tour starts on Aug. 19. "I haven't seen a [tape] yet, though, and since I'm the only drummer, there's a lot for me to learn," she says. "I saw Amy Ray, and she said she wrote a song for the event. There will probably be some cool covers and some original stuff. Josephine and I are talking of covering a Kostars song called 'Roll the Dice,' which is not on the record." The record she's talking about is Klassics with a "K" by the Luscious Jackson side project that Wiggs produced. "The Indigo Girls are so into collaborations and are super musical," adds Schellenbach. "Every time they play, they have a billion people coming up onstage with them. It's such a refreshing attitude to be so open." -- Carrie Borzillo ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 22:45:15 -0400 From: freaker Subject: chat room if anyone is online...its currently about 10:50 or so est i'm up for chatting and the thing is working for once! :) http://www.mygale.org/01/luscious/chat.htm and yer there...or not... sara ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 16:06:50 -0400 From: freaker Subject: chat room ok...if anyone is on at the moment...its about 4:07 est and i'm lonely in the chat room...please come visit me...you can pick the topic of conversation even! sara aka superfreak ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 16:37:27 EDT From: Dana2100@aol.com Subject: Fwd: chat room This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --part0_901744647_boundary Content-ID: <0_901744647@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII - --part0_901744647_boundary Content-ID: <0_901744647@inet_out.mail.aol.com.2> Content-type: message/rfc822 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-disposition: inline From: Dana2100@aol.com Return-path: To: freaker@home.com Subject: Re: chat room Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 16:35:51 EDT Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit I'll come talk in the chat room some time....
