Both Jill and Gabby seem to walk that fine line- their lyrics rebel against the 'typical' , top 40 female songwriting standard formula of -'I can only talk about my mushy, girly feelings- I cannot touch any topics that might just be construed as controversial, nor can I deal with my own sexuality in an intelligent, forthright, non-misogynistic fashion'. Hey everyone! Part 1: Rochester NY and just outside (when I'm not in school) Part 2: First started liking LJ when I heard City Song and later Deep Shag on the radio. I was pretty sure it was the same band....just didn't know their name. :) Right around that time I saw them on Saturday Night Live and fell in love. I went out to get N.I but they didn't have it so I bought Manny...listened to it and liked it. About a week or so later I found N.I. and loved it...still my favorite. I've seen them 3 times now and counting which is a lot considering they have only come around here once in the last few years. I saw them the latest two times in Philly and at Tibet. See what a fan I am! I drove down to Philly and DC for them and had to get a new alternator in the process. What a crazy, but awesome weekend. My friend and I had so much fun on our road trip. They're the best. And I finally got to meet Sara and Jeremy so that made it all the better. :) Oh yeah...I got to hang out with the LJ girls too at the Pontiac Grille and backstage. That was the best day of my life! hee hee Also...if you were at the Philly show....I was one of the two girls that got to sing on stage for Energy Sucker. I was the one with the black pants, white tank-top and blue button-down shirt. I actually keep in touch now with the other girl too. Her name is Penni. I'm gonna tell her about this list...I'm sure she would love to join us. She's cool and it's so awesome that I have a new LJ friend now all because of that concert. OK.....have a GREAT weekend everyone!!! Love, Kate PS: Hilarious message by the way Sara. Isn't it so hard to type when you're completely shit-faced?!! Actually two dreams in one...singing with them and hanging out with them. I only wish I could relive it again and again. It's hard trying to remember it. I want to do it again! ha ha! Anyway...I'm not sure which of the two of us were shorter. I think we were the same height. I don't have curly hair but I think Penni does. I was the one furthest to the right if you're looking from the audience. Did Jill and Gabby have a conference? I didn't really notice. That's funny if they did. I remember Jill asking us if we knew the lyrics to Energy Sucker. I know all of their lyrics but I went blank. Also because I tend to skip that song when I'm listening to N.I. just because I listen when I drive and I like the more upbeat songs. So I told Jill to let me think for a second so I could remember. Then all of a sudden I just said the first part for the song really quickly for her. She seemed to be confident in me. :) I was so nervous being up there not only with LJ but in front of so many people. I was surprised I raised my hand when they asked who knew the lyrics because I'm not one to call attention to myself but I was like, "I have to do this. I know all the lyrics and I'm like their biggest fan" so I just did it. I was so excited when Jill picked Penni and I cause we had been singing and dancing together for the whole show even though I had never met her before. I love meeting and hanging out with LJ fans just cause I don't know any hard-core fans in real life. Anyway, it was a blast even if I did almost mess up at one part. I like the synchronized dance we had going there for a minute too. Jill is awesome like that. I also got on stage to dance for City Song not only cause that song has a lot of meaning for me but it also it kicks ass. Well...sorry for the long post! I just tend to write a lot when I'm excited and thinking back to the concert makes me happy. I can't wait for the next one! ~Kate~ PS: I almost forgot. Komeda was playing that night. They were pretty cool even though I have never heard of them. I will probably get their CD's. Does anyone else have them or like them? I remember asking Jill when I was trying to "break the ice" who they were cause she seemed to know them and was dancing like she liked them. She said they were a band from Sweden and that they were really good. Later on Kate and Tia went up to dance in front with this one guy that was dancing. It was really funny cause they had a monitor up with a camera on the band for people further back in the bar to see. Jill, my friend and I, were all watching the TV monitor and laughing cause you could see Tia and Kate right at the bottom of the screen dancing and acting crazy. It was hilarious. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 03:34:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Bear Boy Subject: survey Answers to your little survey: I first heard of LJ when they released Manny in the UK (1992/3? ish). I read a review of it in one of the weekly music papers and thought it sounded pretty interesting. It was. Still their best record in my humble opinion. I prefer their more hip-hop ish songs (has anyone seen them live recently? what are the new songs like? (if they played any)) I live in London (England). _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? LUSCIOUS JACKSON DRUMMER FILLS IN FOR BLONDIE SHOW Anyone wondering who the woman was behind the kit at Blondie's somewhat surprise show on Friday (July 17) in New York need wonder no longer. It was Luscious Jackson's drummer Kate Schellenbach. Schellenbach received a call from Debbie Harry to get behind the kit for Joey Ramone's Cyberbash '98 show at Tramps (which also featured Ronnie Spector on the bill) in Manhattan during the Intel New York Music Festival. Schellenbach took the place of Blondie drummer Clem Burke, alongside original members Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri. Blondie performed such hits as "One Way Or Another" and "Rapture." - -Carrie Borzillo SNEAKER PIMPS SINGER KELLI DAYTON EXITS While Virgin staffers have known for several weeks, it was finally confirmed Tuesday (July 21) that Sneaker Pimps sultry lead singer Kelli Dayton has left the band. A spokesperson at Virgin says the split was "definitely amicable," however some speculate that there had been creative differences for some time. It was undetermined at press time if the remaining members of the group - -- guitarist Chris Corner and keyboardist Liam Howe -- would hire a new, full time female lead singer or pull a Massive Attack and have various guest vocalists. For now, Corner is handling lead vocal duties while working on the next Sneaker Pimps album in a London studio. Virgin expects a new Sneaker Pimps album to be out in spring of 1999. About half a dozen songs are already done, and in the same vein as the group's Becoming X, which spawned the hits "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar." Meanwhile, Dayton is working on solo material of her own. It was undetermined if Virgin would be releasing the material and whether it would be under Dayton's name or under a new group name. - -Carrie Borzillo sara... who will in this century update the lj site...get the contest going...and wake up from the evol nightmare that has been her life... http://listen.to/lusciousjackson ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 20:27:33 -0700 From: Miss Propaganda Subject: kate in blondie... ...okay, I'm not emotionally attached to whats-her-face of the Sneaker Pimps. But geez, how many people has this been good for? (please don't everyone start answering this question, as it is very rhetorical) Example: Belinda Carlisle and the Go-Go's....oh yeah, I know you all have her new album *hints of sarcasm* Okay, well maybe some people do, but she's certainly riding on the momentum of the Go-Go's and well, whatever... ...kay, next: uh, my most disheartening event of the past year or something...Anna Waronker leaving That Dog...and then she has the nerve to work with former go-go's (well okay, That Dog worked with Charlotte whats her face before that, but whatever) my logic deceives even myself. Another that I just thought of...Tanya Donelly, kay, I like her solo stuff...but I think Belly was something of an enigma from the get-go (they couldn't really find their own personal grooves...or maybe there was just too much personally grooving going on, I do not know). So maybe she's not a good example, but my point was that from my perspective, she had a lot better thing going with Belly....or maybe they split up for the right reasons...whatever. I'll shut up on that point, cuz it's not helping me... Okay, I think I have a point somewhere in here...I understand that these women think they can make it without their bands, but hello? How do they think they got there?? It wasn't by their own sheer magic, it was by the group as a whole...so if they are ready to not to live up to their pasts, then, by golly, more power to them. and as a little sidebar, if anyone happens to come across *ahem* a bootleg of that previously mentioned Blondie show...blah, blah, yadda, yadda, lots of money involved ;-), blah, blah, yadda, yadda...hehe kay, bye bye Sarah (the rambler) http://home.earthlink.net/~rubyredd/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 23:57:44 -0400 (EDT) From: spastica@villagenet.com (lepainperdu) Subject: Lilith and Losses in Bands! All I would like to say is that bands breaking up makes me mad.....but i guess if people are unhappy where they are, then they should do what they have to do. I hated the That Dog break up, and i believe that Anna's choice was a bad one....everyone in that band is extremely good and have their own input, just put on a record. Then you have 7 year bitch in which Selene and Elizabeth were stupid and fought. Emily's Sassy Lime broke apart, Veruca Salt disbanded.....I wasn't fond of the last album....it seemed all apart of what the producer wanted to do. Lush is gone because of the death. Sindi from the Lunachicks just left the band. Of course Vivian left which is sad, but she couldn't take touring. Patti Schemel is on the verge of leaving Hole, or maybe has left all together, no one knows. Red Aunts are breaking apart since they feel they are too old to be stuck with the same group for so long. there is my run down of sad things with bands also...i almost damn near got Natalie Merchants autograph. I was about to leave work during lilith fair. ( I work at a theater) and im walking like equal to a block which is a road where the tour busses come in aka the VIP section...So im walking and there walks Natalie Merchant about a foot next to me, w/ a friend. So i took a double take and run into the kitchen to get a friend as we try to catch up with Natalie who is a little ahead. We start running and my frigin boss starts calling me, so i had to walk back in to work! DAMN! I didn't have my chance and i ruined it! But i saw a lot of the bands! I also met Lili Haydn! The most amazing violin player in the world! She was amazing live. I talked to her and got an autograph. It was her last date opening up for Jimmy page and Robert Plant and the crowd actually i believe liked it, yet of course some idiot screamed "you suck". But it is great to work at a theater. Free concerts! and you get up in front! i recommend it for everyone! peter "The Butter08 Site" http://members.tripod.com/~butterof69/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 08:20:32 -0700 From: "Canyon Man" Subject: No LJ content but well worth reading....... Hi all. I know that all of you love great music... otherwise you wouldn't be here digging LJ, right? Anyway, here's a chance for another great band to get some well-deserved exposure.... legendary singer- songwriter Essra Mohawk and her band: KillerGrooveBand. Here's the scoop... ***************************************************** Subject: The Essra Mohawk/KGB "College of Knowledge" - once-in-a-while news ***************************************************** Tim Drummond, Essra Mohawk's partner in the KillerGrooveBand, who you will definitely hear from soon, coined the college of knowledge bit, and I kinda liked it.... so what do you know... it stuck! Just a quick bit........ Dancin' in the District is a weekly concert series held every Thursday during the summer months at Riverfront Park in Nashville, Tennessee. Since Dancin' in the District began in 1993, the attendance has grown from 250 in 1993 to 10,000 in 1997. This event has been voted Nashville's Favorite Place to Dance. The Dancin' in the District season runs from May 7 - August 20. Right now, Dancin' in the District is conducting a 'you book the band' contest. The top five vote-getters from July 16-31 will play in a battle of the bands to determine who will get the opening slot on the final Dancin' In The District Thursday, August 20. Go to: http://nashville.citysearch.com/E/F/NASTN/0000/19/03/ and put in your vote for KillerGrooveBand! Here's the deal, though. KillerGrooveBand is not listed among the bands in the drop-down menu, so what you'll have to do is WRITE THEM IN next to your name when you put in your entry, and leave the band selection space as showing 'select one band.' (Otherwise, another band will get credit for your vote, not KillerGrooveBand.) KGB is without question the best unsigned band on the planet, and if they make it into the battle of the bands, they will most likely win, get the gig, and who knows what else. Dancin' in the District would be great exposure for Essra and KGB. Let's give them some support! And by the simple act of voting, you will get a chance to win an Epiphone guitar. Not too shabby! Well, dots all for this time.
