When I got there, Isoon found that the reason was that Bob Dylan was performing in Cardiff at thesame time (I knew this already because the people I usually go to see RH withhad gone to Cardiff. He opened with a song I didnbt know which contained thelines bSome things can changeb and (if I can read my notes correctly) referredto 1969 and 1970. Next songs were the familiar bMy Wife and My Dead Wifeb and bIOften Dream of Trainsb, then bDevilbs Coachmanb and bSaturday Grooversb. Hisvoice was distinctly croaky at the start but warmed up through the evening. Atthis point he donned a harmonica harness (with some trepidation) for bI DonbtRemember Guildfordb and assured us that Bob Dylan would not be playing it inCardiff. It fell off during the final line, but otherwise worked well. bVictorianSquidb was delightful b surely based on Michael Moorcockbs whimsical timetravel books about Mrs Underwood? The highlight of the evening for me was aspellbinding performance of bGlass Hotelb, far and away the best song on bEyeb. The last solo item was a song about Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath which Ihadnbt heard before. RH, in standard issue polka dot shirt, then introducedex-Soft Boy and regular Bristol confrere Morris Windsor, wearing a Toucanbalancing a pint of Guinness on its beak shirt. Morris played variouspercussion instruments and sang backing vocals for the remainder of theevening. RH called for two glasses of water band a plate of olives, pleaseb(those who have been to a Fleece gig will appreciate that a packet of crisps orpeanuts is about the limit of the catering department). They sang bThe Wreck of the Arthur Leeb (frequently playedat the Fleece), Chinese Bones, Winchester, Museum of Sex (bchugging in Eb).There was a discussion of earth, wind and fire at this point, and Morrismentioned that Phil Collins was back. bI didnbt know hebd gone awayb respondedRobyn; he expressed surprise that David Crosby had referred to Phil Collins asa friend on Twitterb& The next song was bAlright Yeahb and the set finished with bGoodnightI sayb. They returned with a keyboard player who was only introducedas bCharlieb, who accompanied the set in what I thought was a rather tentativemanner. After another B mention of BobDylan they played bTiny Montgomery says hellob, a distinct obscurity from theZimmerman canon, followed by The Ghost In You,B There was a discussion of Brian Ferry and Morris mentioned he had seen him at the Colston Hall recently.B I'd Do Anything To Turn You On, the Crystal Ship, Queen of Eyes,a fabulous trolleybus song about travelling with his father in 1964 which Ibmsure I should have recognised, bGonna See The Rivermanb (possibly) and finishedwith bThe Lizardb.B Sorry for the scrappy nature of my notes and number of songs I didn't know.B Perhaps someone else can fill in the gaps? - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V19 #364 ********************************
