Audacity can do that for you. If the cassette levels were fine before digitising, but came out low after, it's best to get levels as good as you can right off the bat -- otherwise you're raising your noise floor along with the signal when you boost a low-level recording. All you really need is aux level output from a standard cassette deck, and the aux in of your computer's sound card. Audacity will do the recording for you -- no need for Total Recorder, but if Total Recorder gives you level monitoring (VU meter simulation of some sort), you're fine with that as well. I have Audacity, though I don't use it much. I just went though the paces myself. There's a microphone icon at the top centre of the screen that you can use to adjust input level. Mine came up set to maximum by default. Click on tracks->add new->audio track. Then click on the red record button on the transport section in the upper left hand side. You'll see levels as you record, I think. There's also a - / + slider control at the left hand side of the track that defaults to the middle of the range. You can probably get some level boost out of that if you need to. Clipping is to be avoided at all costs, so keep you levels comfortably below the top. Digital clipping sounds awful. Sound should be set to stereo, 44100hz, 16 bit (or as high as your sound card will let you set it). Once you record, you export the track to WAV format, or MP3 or what have you. The cassette deck doesn't have enough juice, which is why your signal strength is so low. When I dump cassettes to my Mac, I use a gadget called a Behringer XENYX 302USB mixer. You can get them for anywhere between $50-$75. Should work with Windows as well. I bought it when I was still a casual fan. Now that I have all of the records, I've been deleting the Chronology tracks. And that's when I realized that the Queen Elvis version is different. dp On Apr 12, 2014 11:00 AM, "Edoxtator" wrote: > What is the 'Chronology Compilation'? > > Sent from my iPhone > > > On Apr 12, 2014, at 9:41 AM, Dave Purcell wrote: > > > > Hi all, > > > > Do any of you know the origin of the version of Queen Elvis that is on > the > > Chronology compilation? Hi all, Do any of you know the origin of the version of Queen Elvis that is on the Chronology compilation? It is different from the album version and the demo that is on the reissue. I only recently realized this, and I have struck out with a Google search. Any info is appreciated.
