If you were a priest: "transparent earl" version and others. I have dug out three slightly different versions: two from 1986 and one from 1997. I also listened to a couple of 1987 versions, by which time the song had settled down to its album lyric. But interestingly the latest 1997 version reverts to the 1986 "nun" verse and the "tattered grim and dead" third verse. I think that "oysters" twice in the Glastonbury version is just a mistake, and it should be "cloisters / oysters" as in the other two versions. "So please don't mock my other side" seems to have disappeared permanently after 1986. - - Mike Godwin PS Glad to hear that Andy Kershaw seems to have recovered from all his tribulations and his new book is selling well: http://www.andykershaw.co.uk/ Version 1: Town & Country Club, 10th June 1986, with the Egyptians including Roger Jackson If you were a priest I would wait at least Up unto confession time and crawl into your box Breathing like a fox, hunting for obsession time and I've spent a lot of time on this to be like you So please don't mock my other side If you were a nun I would surely run Down to where your cloisters are and I would intertwine Around you like a vine, my grapes are where your oysters are and I've spent a lot of time on this to be with you So please don't lock away your eyes If you were a ghost I would treasure most Time I never spent with you and wander through the world Like a transparent earl, till I knew what I meant to you and I've thrown a lot of time away to be like you So please don't lock away your eyes So please don't lock away your eyes Away your eyes (away your eyes) Version 2: Glastonbury Festival, 22nd June 1986, with the Egyptians including Roger Jackson. Version dedicated to Andy Kershaw(!) If you were a priest I would wait at least Up unto confession time and crawl into your box Padding like a fox, hunting for obsession time and I've spent a lot of time on this to be like you So please don't mock my other side If you were a nun I would surely run Down to where your oysters are and I would intertwine Around you like a vine, my grapes are where your oysters are and I've spent a lot of time on this to be with you So please don't lock away your eyes If you were a ghost I would treasure most Time I never spent with you and wandered through your head Tattered grim and dead, till I knew what I meant to you and I've thrown a lot of time away to be like you So please don't mock my other side So please don't lock away your eyes Away your eyes (away your eyes) Version 3: Kershaw session, 1997, with Tim Keegan and Jake Kyle If you were a priest I would wait at least Up unto confession time and crawl into your box Breathing like a fox, hunting for obsession time and I've spent a lot of time on this to be with you So please don't lock away your eyes If you were a nun I would surely run Down to where your cloisters are and I would intertwine Around you like a vine, my grapes are where your oysters are and I've thrown a lot of time away to be like you So please don't lock away your eyes If you were a ghost I would treasure most Time I never spent with you and wandered through your head Tattered grim and dead, till I knew what I meant to you and I've spent a lot of time on this to be with you So please don't lock away your eyes So please don't lock away your eyes Away your eyes * 3 ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V19 #186 ********************************
