I thought some of you might be interested. Hope you are all well! "...Had to post to say how great Ray was at the Big Star tribute show at the Barbican...Ray came on to finish the show with, first, an inspirational version of Till The End Of The Day...Introduced thus..."Alex and Big Star did few covers, but every now and then there was a songwriter and a song that meant so much to them, they'd feel they had to do it...The next guest is one of those songwriters...Ladies and Gentlemen, Ray Davies....." Ray told an interesting tale of "Recovering in New Orleans, Alex was, Not a Friend,, but a Neighbour....He leant me his guitar...And charged me for the privilege.....". At this point in proceedings probably thirty people were on stage, including a small orchestra, Ira from Yo La Tenga, Mike Mills from REM, Robyn Hitchcock, Mitch Easter, Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), and many many others I cant recall at present. The highlight of the evening was Ray singing "The Letter"....Emotional! All in all a magic evening, with a truly unforgettable closing moment. A fitting tribute to not only the late lamented Alex Chilton, but a celebration of a too long overlooked body of work, that, especially on the third album (Played in full during the evening) was in places years ahead of its time."
