I'll have to pull out "The Message in the Bottle" from the secondary bookcases. It has some interesting ideas in it -- I don't know that I've read the entire book, but I can't imagine that I wouldn't read an an essay with the fantastic title of "Metaphor as Mistake." I also at one point had a copy of his book (I believe it was called) The Last Self-Help Book. I lost that one to a borrow, but I enjoyed it. I highly approved of the title. xo - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2012 14:00:01 +1300 From: grutness@slingshot.co.nz Subject: Re: Open letter / REAP > Dear fegList, > > I miss you. > > love, lep We're all still here, sitting in the dark.Watching as the bleeps from the screen get ever dimmer and ever thinner... the translocation of so many of us to Facebook seems to have made this ol' faithful list grind to a halt, though, which is sad. > Rauf Denktash, 87. > > (and no, he didn't play piano on The Muppet Show.) I'm part way into Stephen King's 11/22/63, and enjoying it, but, like most Stephen King books, it's long and it has it lulls (not to be confused with LOLs.) Meanwhile, I was distracted into starting Walker Percy's The Moviegoer again after reading this lovely commemoration of the 50th anniversary of its publication: http://www.themillions.com/2011/08/living-out-the-day-the-moviegoer-turns-fifty.html I was reminded me of the loveliness of Percy's writing by the line "[N]ot for five minutes will I be distracted from the wonder." He calls himself a Christian existentialist, whatever the hell that means. But I'm somehow so glad to be reading something that's not cool, that's not ironic, and that's not turning to the past and winking at something. I'm so tired of being hip. xo P.S. I dreamt I kissed Lt. Sulu on the stairs. - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2012 15:16:29 -0500 From: "Stewart C. Ah well. Know that I am thinking of you. The other thing is that I just discovered that Mitt Romney still lives in my town, supposedly. He'll be voting at the Senior Center tomorrow. That means he'll have been in the State of Massachusetts for all of 10 minutes in a 3-year period. I thought we were rid of him for good when he sold his mega-house. Happy birthday, Robin, in arrears. Happy birthday to everyone else because I don't know when I'll be digested again. We listened to a lot of Robyn songs on Saturday to celebrate. I miss the list too. The digests rarely come out these days.
