So far4 I've managed to hear from just about all my Chch friends, and the only ones i haven't heard from are pretty reclusive so they probably just don't think it's worth telling everyone if they're OK. Central Christchurch is a shambles - a national state of emergency has been declared, and there are constant, understandable, comparisons of the damage with 9/11. Carrie's right that the main problem at the moment is a leaning 26-storey hotel building which could fall if there are any more major tremors. The other big problem is that a lot of the city was on reclaimed land which has simply turned to mud ("liquefaction" is the technical term) so much of the infrastructure is badly damaged and many buildings have damaged foundations. It's a tragedy, not just from the point of view of casualties - Chch was a beautiful, beautiful city, with many historic heritage buildings, a high number of which are probably beyond repair. As someone once sang, my favourite buildings are all falling down. But as he also sang, we're in luck, we're not there.... but it does feel very much like "there but for the grace..." - walkign round Dunedin today and looking at all the lovely old buildings I couldn't help but seeing them as they would be with their fronts caved in. >My grandfather was a cop in Long Beach (CA) in '33 when the earthquake >hit and leveled most of the town. Problem is (a) lots of old pre-code buildings, and (b) buildings which were weakened by an earthquake in the same region six months ago. New Zealand set in codes like that after this country's (previously?) most deadly quake, which hit Napier in 1931. > >My sister has not heard from her friends in Christchurch so I do hope >that they are all OK, yours and hers and everyone elses. Hey, all. The feglist has become my source of reliable info for a lot of things, so I'm back with a SoCal question. My son is starting to hear from grad school (particle physics), and he has gotten into UC Santa Barbara, which has one of the top programs in the country. From what I have learned, it's beautiful, it's very white, living is expensive, and the undergrad school is a party school (which is neither here nor there - at almost 22, Curt knows who he is and will party when and where he wants to). I think that some of you might have words of wisdom to add. Of course, Curt will make his own decision, but I like to pass on what I can from my sources. A number of the Chicagoans (Michael and Michael and more) were really helpful when we were looking at Northwestern for my daughter.
