Hi all - yes, thank you all for your concerns, I'm fine. A combination of laptop problems and an understandable slowing/clogging of NZ's internet links meant I limited my net activity to just news sources and facebook for a while, rather than emailing. At lunchtime today, there was a wobbling shake of the ground here. My first thought was that it was a moderate local earthquake, and it wasn't till a few seconds later I thought..."that'd better not have been an aftershock in Christchurch". It was, and far worse than last September's quake. that one was 40km from the city and deep. This one was only 9km from the city centre, near the port town of Lyttelton, and very shallow. The shallower the quake, the more damaging. Central Christchurch is like a war zone. The city's most iconic building, the anglican cathedral, has lost its spire, and many of the city's other notable buildings are badly damaged. Many of the streets have turned to mush. The death toll is at least 65 and expected to rise considerably - at a complete guess I'd say expect it to be five to ten times that once all the figures are in, especially since there's very little information come through from Lyttelton yet. I have a lot of friends in Christchurch, but as far as I've been able to find out they're all OK, though there are a few I haven't heard any information from and I'm still worried about. At least one is now homeless, and it wouldn't surprise me if others were as well. It a real mess. For those of you who are Peter Jackson afficionadoes, BTW, Lyttelton was the location for shooting on the film "The Frighteners", and (IIRC) there are good views of the Cathedral in the newsreel footage at the beginning of "Heavenly Creatures". Thanks for all the worried messages and thoughts - they're appreciated. Yes, James, as Carrie wrote, we all know of the earthquake now but don't know how it has affected you. Give us a sign of life, OK? Jill ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2011 23:01:42 -0800 From: cgalbraith Subject: Re: [oldschoolfegs] Well, they do call NZ "the shaky isles"... Hey James, Thanks for the update. Some of know the drill so we get that you can only get online when you can. These shallow earthquakes are so destructive. I am so sorry, I've seen some of the photos and had seen "befores" since my sister and bro-in- law were there last year. It was beautiful. I heard tonight on the radio that a major hotel was structurally unsound as of the last aftershock and is leaning so they have had to stop rescue efforts in a 2 -3 block radius until it comes down or they implode it. God I hope there is no one in the rubble. My grandfather was a cop in Long Beach (CA) in '33 when the earthquake hit and leveled most of the town. My uncle had just left the high school pool building when it flattened behind him. It was that specific earthquake that made building multi-level buildings out of brick illegal in California. Perhaps they will have to consider some similar code for the south island there? My sister has not heard from her friends in Christchurch so I do hope that they are all OK, yours and hers and everyone elses. With that said, when the '89 quake hit in SF, I lost phone, gas and electric for over a week and my neighborhood, due to being on sand, was badly hit. My friends, esp. those living further away, where in a state when we finally got back up and running (in an analog world too!).
