This is fresh on my mind because I recently paid $10 to subject myself to viewing "The Wizard of Oz" while listening to "DSOTM" in a movie theater (Alamo Drafthouse for the mo'fuckin' win) while under the influence of only a few heavy beers. I learned many things: WoO is an amazingly, brain-shittingly, mind-numbingly bad movie. And you have to hear DSOTM three fucking times before the movie ends. And stoners do really stooopid shit. The first time? "OK, hey, that coincidence is kinda cool." The second time? "Uh-oh, how much longer will this movie go on? DId I just see a wire hanging from that fucking lion's tail? Why is that man wearing silver diapers? How did the scarecrow know he doesn't have a brain?" The third time? "MAKE IT STOP! I hate you for making me associate this movie with DSOTM." I could have sworn the theater was playing an MP3 of the album, too. Grrr. So don't subject yourself to it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2011 14:42:30 -0500 From: lep Subject: Re: FIGHT!!! Mac vs. PC hi allFegs, i just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and advice on macs. i know the suspense has been killing you, so i'm sure you'll all be thrilled to know i made a decision and will soon be the proud owner of 13" macbook air. oh, and a black 160 GB ipod that, had i been quicker on my feet, *would* have had "FYTC" engraved on the back. i guess i have to name it now. i keep wanting to call it ari. oh, and thanks in advance for answering all the questions i'm sure to have, as well as listening me to gripe "it's too damn light" when it falls off my lap. as ever, lauren p.s. [...] first, i presume the buddy song was released on a label. would it really be released without first obtaining the rights? and if so, wouldn't a&m already have sued buddy's label's pants off? second, is it really possible to plagiarise music? 'cause buddy's band performed the song, right? even if it's note for note, it's still their own performance. i mean to say, it can't be an exact duplicate, the way the written word could. besides, it's an entirely different lyric, isn't it? third, why should outright plagiarism be legally relevant? we're all opposed to "intellectual property" here, n'est pas? sure, i'll grant that it'd be a cool thing to do to say (in both liner notes and performance), "you know, if you like this song, you should check out the original, upon which the music is based; by a very great singer/song-writer called 'robyn hitchcock'." but no way in hell should it be a legal obligation -- neither in music, nor in any other form of cultural dissemination. i've downloaded, but not yet listened to, the new destroyer (which, opined newman in his twitter feed, is bejar's best work). why? too busy listening to *The King Is Dead*! i've listened to it every day since it leaked -- save for a few days when my fucking headphones were busted -- and have to restrain myself from listening to it more often than that. (otherwise, i've been listen to podcasts like a motherfucker; hence, no opportunity to listen to other music... but i've just finished downloading the new devotchka LP (!!!), as well as new EPs from buck 65 and josh ritter. soooooooo, i guess i need to get some variety into my listening ways.) when i'm *not* listening to it, its songs are in my head every waking moment of the day. even when i get up to take a leak, i've got its songs in my head. *all* of 'em too -- even the little, ahem, doggerel which serves as the album's hidden track -- not just a select few faves. it's one of the damneder things what's ever happened to me. hey, whatever works for you makes me happy. me, i'm sitting here in paradise, where it's between 80 and 86 degrees every day of the year...and this album still has my dimpled ass wickedly kicked. i do certainly agree, though, that many or most of the songs carry a seasonal feel to them. also think the record is brilliantly sequenced, and that the sequence somehow enhances the feeling of the passage of time. other thoughts: - -- when one attempts to sing along to these songs, one must perform mangum-esque contortions in order to make the words come out right. is fun! - -- "Down By The Water" is, i say, the best single with which p. buck's been involved since "What's The Frequency?". - -- really digging moen's contributions. i've always considered both nate and john to be way cool; but, somehow, haven't really considered their musical contributions to have been terribly essential. - -- uh, well, i was reading through the lyrics, and i see that it's "...war of the *end-times*", rather that "*enzymes*". (c.f. my previous subject-line, "Me and Eb and The War Of The Enzymes".) which, i'll grant, does make more sense. but, dammit, the latter is still cooler! also, it still really sounds to mine ears like "enzymes". - -- and now, who is my favourite band -- the new pornographers, the decemberists, or the live wilco? i *think* it's still the former, but i'm honestly not for sure... ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V19 #15 *******************************
