Mac vs. PC Are you guys in the mood to argue over whether the laptop I get should be a Mac or a PC? N.B. I've never had any kind of Mac - the reason I'm considering one is to be more "well-rounded" as far as computers go. My main computer (desktop) will still be a PC. It's still going along fine. Right now, tc is in the lead his (surprise) Mac suggestion, but he gets points for, you know, just being tc. If I get a Mac, how do I get my mp3s copied over (I have lots)? If all else fails, you can always bounce the content to second drive (borrowed or whatever), reformat your PC drive, and bounce it back. I'm pro-Mac, but I wouldn't be able to afford one right now if my current one died. Actually, with this crew, perhaps I should be asking if anyone has a PC laptop and why. As far as Mac laptops go, what's the life expectation (I don't mean like how long until you get bored and want a better -- how long before they die)? FWIW, I wouldn't plan be being laptop girl and taking it everywhere with me, although I guess one never knows (maybe I should plan on being laptop girl; that way I can be like at least 50% cooler and perhaps write a comic strip about me and wacky laptop adventures.) I've had my Dell desktop since 2003 and it's been running (no lie) 24/7 and it's never missed a beat. I assume that's fairly long-lived. xo - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2011 15:58:52 -0500 From: "Stewart C. WindFarm doesn't run on a mac. I use three laptops regularly: * at work, a tiny Toshiba running XP. It feels plasticky, but is surprisingly tough. As long as it's running from mains power, it has enough grunt for analysis work. Windows is clunkola, though. * at home, this 18 month old MacBook. Adequate for all my nerdry; I can open a terminal, and all is well. I plan to keep it for another couple of years. * at work, my unofficial GIS/data bashing/skivebox is a 7 year old Thinkpad running Ubuntu. The thing flies, and the interface is very slick. Forget doing anything Flash-based under Linux, though, for it is slow. If you change to Mac, you will curse the lack of mouse buttons. Real computers have three mouse buttons, and use those funny wee reflective mousepads ... ;-) Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2011 18:40:26 -0800 From: kevin studyvin Subject: Re: 1-800-JAMES-DIV On Wed, Feb 2, 2011 at 12:11 PM, lep wrote: > Just so James can keep up with what's going on his country. > > Because, as you know, Americans make other countries exist (even, or > especially, the ones with which we're at war.) > War is peace. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2011 22:38:27 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: 1-800-JAMES-DIV On Wed, Feb 2, 2011 at 8:40 PM, kevin studyvin wrote: > On Wed, Feb 2, 2011 at 12:11 PM, lep wrote: > > > Just so James can keep up with what's going on his country. > > > > Because, as you know, Americans make other countries exist (even, or > > especially, the ones with which we're at war.) > > > > War is peace. > Paul is dead. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2011 13:36:52 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: FIGHT!!! I assume that's fairly long-lived. of course you can never generalize, but in my experience you can expect the same from Apple laptops. Many of my friends and acquaintances have Macs (guess who's responsible for that), and among laptops the only premature deaths were caused by negligence or accidents. That does *not* include the power supply. Personally I've been lucky in that my original one still works, but a few people had to buy new ones. Since they're "special", they're not exactly cheap ... sometimes you get knock-offs that aren't as expensive but since they violate Apple's patents the suppliers usually don't last very long. A couple of thoughts from them: 1) Is "The live-in years" Robyn's most neglected gem? How come no-one mentions this track? It's also possibly his most subcontinentally-influenced (the only other one I can think of with any real South Asian influence is the octaved violin of some versions of "Beautiful Queen") In my mind I hear what would be a startling maskup of The Live-in Years and something by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan... 2) I've never noticed how influenced the song "Innocent Boy" seems to be by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. RH certainly knows CR's music - he's covered "Come u8p and see me" live, I know. Anyone else notice the similarity in feel, or am I going mad here?
