Huge phenomenon, barely tracked in the mainstream at all (the few articles I have read on it were filled with names I already knew, which means very surface details since I only know a tiny bit myself). The surprise w as... I thought the kids would end up alienating me by liking something that clashed with my aesthetics or musical ethos, but no... the thing that makes the difference is purely the *venue* (or the ubiquity thereof). Eden's taste in non-Youtube (pre-Youtube?) music makes sense to me; she like Beatles and Bowie and Devo and Tegan & Sara and the New Pornos (I'm actually thinking she might be ready for Robyn based on her love of the English and eccentric), so some of the YouTube stuff she likes totally tracks. Especially the, well, English and eccentric stuff like Charlie McDonnell and the quirkier Hank Green material. But I don't think she would ever like a gimmicky one-dimensional synth band like AllCaps on her own, or the bland chops-heavy Pompamoose*, or for god's sake all the way way way sub-Weird Al parody songs of pop hits that she doesn't like (or sometimes hasn't even heard) to begin with. Overall, this might be sort of like the advent of MTV, when kids started to be into music just because of the videos, and genre went briefly out the window. Except this is not in the least fueled by corporate money... it is pretty much viral by definition. Either situation does carry a bit of a "lowest common denominator" determination. I'm trying to keep up in a way, and crack the code. And I don't want to sound too judgmental or alienated from Eden by this... we work together on so much musical stuff that this is more of an ongoing dialogue than a source of real irritation between us. - -Rex *these guys, and apparently a lot of other followers, base their appeal mostly on these multiply split-screen videos showing the two members performing all of the parts and overdubs "in real time", the point being ZOMG THEY CAN PLAY ALL THE INSTRUMENTS!!11!1, which sort of irritates me because ALMOST EVERY MUSICIAN EVAR does exactly that ALL THE TIME-- I do it daily ferfucksake, I just don't bother to videotape it because... well, what, I'm supposed to dress up before I do the banjo overdub?. I guess it's supposed to be a musical equivalent of the Dogma aesthetic or something... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2010 21:29:49 +0000 From: "craigie*" Subject: Re: stream-a-go-go My Christmas Compilation #5 http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LVLHETK0 share and enjoy!! - -- first things first, but not necessarily in that order...
