I just Netflixed an excellent movie about this very subject, "I Need That Record! The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1274725/ Sobering and depressing. Each and every great record store of my childhood is gone. I'm thankful that Austin, TX still has a very healthy record-store scene. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2010 18:32:05 -0400 From: ross Subject: Re: Quick technical question A guess: malware flooding your bandwidth with spam originating from your machine? Outlook has to be the most targeted mail reader on the market. You could try loading an alternate reader like Thunderbird, configuring it and sending an experimental email from it. That may or may not help if it's malware, because some of them don't need an email program at all to send the junk once they've got a foothold. Or it may not be related to malware at all, in which case I have no ideas. On 10-11-01 12:09 PM, hssmrg@bath.ac.uk wrote: > Hi gang > > I use Microsoft Outlook for my home e-mails. Most do. I know for my company the limit is 5mb for an attachment. If you're a Microsoft Live ID user, you can probably send it easier by turning on Skydrive (skydrive.live.com), posting it there and sending your would-be email receiver the link. You can also restrict permissions that way pretty easily so only they can get in and download the file. Hope that helps. Because on my own visit to the Bay Area in 2000, I had great experiences at both the SF and Berkeley Amoebas, possibly colored by the fact that I had friends working at both locations at the time, but I think even without that I would have been impressed. But since you're not the only person I've heard grouse about L.A., I'm hypothesizing that there might be a difference in management and/or attitude between them. later, Miles - -- over a year of feeling guilty about not blogging enough! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2010 22:23:37 -0700 From: Rex Broome Subject: Re: REAP the record store On Mon, Nov 1, 2010 at 9:50 PM, Miles Goosens wrote: > > Is the L.A. I always loved those Bay Area Amoebas, too. The LA one is bigger, and there are good things about it, but the prices aren't the best and it just feels... kind of... smug. Like they're the last ones standing, and they're "too big to fail" and they know it... to say nothing of the fact that they had a thing or two to do with the demise of their erstwhile competitors. There may be an age factor, too, in that I've finally gotten old enough to be annoyed by the hipster douchebagges of which I am not longer one. And since it is the only record store of note, all of them are there. At once. It's a bit much. Actually, there is one venerable old school record store within walking distance of my house-- Rockaway-- but it is less than a shadow of its former self... - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 2010 01:49:23 -0400 From: lep Subject: Fwd: NEW on DIME: Robyn Hitchcock 2010-10-30 Three Kings, Clerkenwell, London, UK Yay. - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: DIME Date: Tue, Nov 2, 2010 at 2:57 PM Subject: NEW on DIME: Robyn Hitchcock 2010-10-30 Three Kings, Clerkenwell, London, UK To: DIME A new torrent has been uploaded to DIME.
