Subject: My name is "Eb", and Objects In My Bunje Hole Are Closer Than They Appear aloha fegs! well, i finally broke down and bought my ass a laptop. so, one can now follow my travels at some mini-reviews: - -- the corin tucker band, *1,000 years*. oh, fuck! judging by the kexp performance, i was expecting to hate this. instead, i really, really love it. of course, it makes me wonder what might have been. sleater-kinney breaking up when the did is kinda like ted williams going off to fight in two fucking idiotic wars right during his prime. - -- film school, *Fission*. man, why can't every band be this fucking awesome? i swear, this is better than *Hideout* (which was my #3 album, if memory serves, of its year -- uh, '07, i think?). - -- johnny flynn, *Been Listening*. definitely no soph slump here! won't call it a masterpiece, but it's very nice indeed. an improvement, i say, over the quite good *A Larum*. - -- lamontagne, *Good Willing And The Creek Don't Rise*. would you believe i've only listened to it once? i'm pretty meh on it; but must get around to giving it another chance. - -- the national, *High Violet*. damn. this is some kinda fucking awesome. - -- the eels, *Tomorrow Morning*. stick a fork in the eels. - -- *Collapse*. from the mighty chris smith (author of *American Movie*, one of my top-ten flicks for the '00s, even though it was technically released in december of '99). it's basically an update to *End Of Suburbia*, but with only one interview subject: the always-entertaining michael ruppert. compelling and fascinating, though nothing exactly earth-shattering here. - -- *Paths Of Glory*. criterion have done it again! such a gorgeous transfer... - -- *Greenberg*. i keep wanting baumbach to make a movie as entertaining as *Kicking And Screaming*; but he keeps wanting to make serious movies instead. it's pretty good. kinkage: sorry, miles, but i really *do* prefer the later period. not just saying this to be contrary, and certainly the early period is great, too (but how come y'all don't include the debut among their highlights?). but the run of *Misfits* through *State Of Confusion* is just so damned rockin', man... smiths discography: again, not trying to be contrary just for contrary's sake. but this doesn't do much for me at all. i'm kinda sorta considering having a go at the u2 discography. have never listened to an album, though certainly am familiar with the hits. used to just despise them, but have softened in recent years. er, what've i got to lose, right? random opinion #1: bob dylan is overrated (at least as a songwriter). random opinion #2: bill berry is underrated. their latest album is so good that it made me delve back into the mazzy star catalogue. i've always loved "Fade Into You" like just about none other, but had never quite liked the rest of the band's material too much. also, there was talk recently of homer having released two singles. don't forget, though *Grow Your Own*, an absolutely sublime compilation which was available only at gigs. just so happens that i've got a copy to hand. here ya go: ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 2010 19:48:39 -0700 From: kevin studyvin Subject: Re: REAP My deepest sympathies. I heard he sold all his stock to Vortex, supposedly the last of the indie/used places. Went there last week - and realized, looking at the dusty shelves and crazily stacked piles in the shabby store, that CDs are now a niche market. Might as well be collecting 78s. cheers, Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 2010 23:14:01 -0700 From: kevin studyvin Subject: Re: REAP I'd go for both. BTW, if you look in the liner notes of Flyin Nun CDs, chances are you will find that a lot of them were written by Roi. Thankfully his health is now just about back to normal. I tried to attach a Powerpoint presentation (size 86 MB) to an e-mail, and it has stuck in the Outbox for more than 24 hours. I get a message 'Outlook has started transmitting this information', but it never actually sends, and then I get a message saying: "Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: 421 Exceeded allowable connection time, disconnecting.'" I thought that if I went away from it for a day it would give up, but it is still blocking my Outbox. I have tried deleting it and moving it to the Junk Mail folder, but no luck. Any ideas please, techies? Thanks! - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V18 #199 ********************************
