Have these 2 ever toured together? Have they ever come close? How many degrees of separation between the two? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2010 17:51:30 -0700 From: Rex Broome Subject: Re: Steve Kilbey On Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 4:35 PM, John B. They certainly share a lot of the same influences, and in some ways, at some times, it comes out sounding similar, but they seem awfully different personality-wise. Robyn seems to have much more of a sense of humor, both personally and in his art (I like a lot of Kilbey's lyrics when he's being more impressionistic and abstract, but when he tries to be funny it can be pretty painful). Probably another big difference is that SK struggled with a major addiction problem for many years after Robyn had his "rough patch", which seems to have amounted to a couple years of hard drinking quite some time ago, whereas Steve was basically a junkie for a few decades. Somehow I feel like that informs the ways in which their art has been different for a good long time now. I'm a big fan of both guys, although I tend to like The Church as a whole and have only a smattering of solo Kilbey (and of course the totally essential Jack Frost discography). Oh, and I know Kilbey hates R.E.M. pretty badly, in contrast to RH's very cosy relations with them. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2010 18:35:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Margrave Subject: Re: Steve Kilbey Rex Broome wrote: > Can't think of any direct links [between Robyn and Steve Kilbey], but > I'm sure there aren't too many degrees of separation. I knew there was a more direct line from Kilbey to the US college rock thing than I could remember. You could also play the always useful Syd Straw card... offhand Syd's on a McLennan record, did stuff with Stipe, straight to RH. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2010 20:32:31 -0400 (EDT) From: Jill Brand Subject: Do It Again I know that there is a fairly large feg contingent in the Seattle area (or am I dreaming?) so I wanted to send this along to you from the Kinks list: "Hoping to get all the Kinks people in the greater Seattle area to come out to the Northwest Film Forum's showing of "Do It Again" on November 4th! Two showings only: 7PM and 9PM." If you like the Kinks at all, you will find this film charming. Oh yeah, Robyn is in it, as well as the Venus 3 (but separately).
