Yes, I have seen "Old Pervert" live, and barely survived. - -- http://scruss.com/blog/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 2010 6:53:38 -0700 From: M Holden Subject: from the Nick Lowe list Just came across this bit on the Nick Lowe list, where Robyn gets the occasional, usually positive mention. Marc I have skipped numerous opportunities to meet Nick, my all time musical hero. I never wanted to have that same encounter or god forbid, catch him at a bad moment and have an unpleasant one. I doubt that it would happen but you never know with artists. I've had more than a few musicians I admire turn out to be a-holes in person, forever dampening the love of their work. Best to leave it alone in most cases. I almost got to go to dinner with a small group of industry folks who were working with Nick a few years back but it fell through. That would be the only way I would want to meet him. In a relaxed, social setting with a few pints. I'm sure he would be a delight regardless, I know too many people who have great stories about meeting him. Never heard a negative one. Unlike former mate Paul Carrack...anyone meet him back during some of those tours? Kind of a jerk. Even saw him stop a show and nearly fight a guy in the front row of a show in Detroit years ago. The Ann Arbor show the other night was great. That band isn't quite the Imp Birds or the Dig My Mood era band, but pretty strong arrangements. Bob Good point, Bob. The only musical artist who I admired-turned-jerk was Robyn Hitchcock for no apparent reason. Don't want to really dwell on it but it was outside after a successful show on his Perspex Island tour in Cincy and he was just rude to his (mostly young college- aged) fans, who were really thrilled to be in his presence and quite a few brandishing some impressive and rare Hitchcock wax! Having said that I'm still a fan of his work, especially with the Soft Boys and his earlier solo career, but since that night, I've cooled on him a bit. Anyway, I'll take Messrs.Lennon, Strummer and Lowe over him any day of the week. Just my two cents worth. In the spiritual kingdom of love, Adrian 4b. Re: Chicago Review Wow, kind of a surprise with Robyn. But my point exactly. My worst was Roger McGuinn who was just a freak and ran from a half dozen, middle-aged fans like he was getting a Beatlemania style stampede. Bob It was a surprise for me as well. I mean, if the guy was dealing with some issues, why would he go out to the parking lot in the midst of 20 or so ardent fans (to bite some of the hands that fed him) instead of staying inside backstage or in the privacy of his tour bus? Go figure. Maybe as it was the height ( or the beginning of his wane, considering how huge grunge-rock was at that point) of his commercial success in the U.S., he felt he could get away with a bit of nose-in-the-air arrogance. Oh well, bet he sometimes wishes he could still draw a younger audience these days like he did back then. LOL concerning Roger! Never would've imagined that! Btw, thanks for your post- I actually feel better getting that off my chest. As with the Perspex Island tshirt I shelled out for before the show ;-) Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 2010 07:23:18 -0700 From: Rex Broome Subject: Re: from the Nick Lowe list On Tue, Oct 19, 2010 at 6:53 AM, M Holden wrote: > > The only musical artist who I admired-turned-jerk was Robyn Hitchcock for > no > apparent reason. > Very odd; perhaps 'twas in the eye of the beholder. The rudest thing I've seen Robyn do fan-wise was just not show up after the show to mingle with fans, which isn't something he's obliged to do anyhow, although he usually does. After the Joe Boyd thing last month he showed up in the bar; my friend Michael and I hung out until he left, and I have to say it was rather surreal just sitting at the bar, registering the ambient conversation as normal save for the very distracting fact that one of the voices rising out of the casual chat was quite clearly Robyn. The other list of folks in that post is an odd bunch. I probably will meet Nick Lowe at some point as he shares a number of friends with my wife, but one of the main shared acquaintances is his ex-wife Charlene Carter, so the link may be dicey. The wife also spent a lot of time with the Squeeze guys and described Paul Carrack as a totally nice guy despite how much the band sort of resented him, but that was before both his solo success and a number of personal tragedies that befell him. McGuinn I've heard is actually very gracious and unpretentious from a lot of people, but then an ex-boss of mine (who admittedly had the social skills of a person who doesn't have any) described a meeting with McGuinn which ended with him punching a woman in the face for no discernible reason, so maybe he's had his phases, too. Pete Buck was awesome when I met him (sorry, TC) but I wouldn't necessarily want to fly transatlantic with him. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Oct 2010 20:05:42 -0400 From: "Stewart C. Megaupload put a very nasty trojan horse on my computer last night when I was trying (ultimately without success) to download Dreamies... I've had mixed results with retrieving files from Megaupload in the past, but now am going to stop using the service altogether.
