The Monks - It's been a while since I listened to the entire album, especially the first track Monk Time. I listened to the version on Five Upstart Americans as well, and the rant makes the song. I also appreciate getting the original album without the bonus tracks. If you begin with "My brother died in Vietnam", you shouldn't end with "Who's got the cuckoo?". Blast Off is one of my favorite songs on the album, but I like just about all of it. If the world were a more just place, there would be more punk bands with electric banjos. I think that Dave Day only knew how to play one chord and they turned that into a strength. (Yes, there's a gearshift key change in Oh How To Do Now. As far as I'm concerned, they recorded him separately and sped up the tape). Departure Lounge - The name reminds me of the Able Tasmans and their album, "Songs from the Departure Lounge". This is kind of a strike against them, the same way I can never listen to Death Cab for Cutie without thinking of the Bonzo Dog Band. For reasons that I can't explain, this album just bounces right off me. With the exception of "King Kong Frown", the album just bounces right off me. I don't have anything bad to say about it. It's just the kind of thing where I think I ought to put some music on, then I realize I've been listening to this for ten minutes. Ideal - currently listening. One or two songs were fairly interesting, but a lot of them seemed a bit lacking in ideas. I mean, "Tubular Belgians in My Goldfield" has a title worth the price of admission (free, in this case)...but, uh, that's about all. And for nearly seven minutes. Followed by another song that just thumps along bluesadaisically. Oh well. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2010 11:36:41 -0700 From: "John B. It's off "kissingsohard" and I need it for a radio show i'm doing tomorrow night. Thanks kindly. - -JBJ ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V18 #182 ********************************
