I wound up running into Robyn before the show (briefly), talked with Steve for a while out on the street when a friend and I were heading out for dinner and he and Linda were coming out of an art gallery. After the show, we talked with Victoria for a while, a very sweet and quirky person. We walked into the lobby for a few minutes and when we came back, Howe Gelb was on stage with Victoria trying to fill out her guitar sound. They played a couple of loose jams, then Linda Pitmon came out on drums and they all played Wayfaring Stranger, and it sounded really good. They did one more loose jam with Robyn joining on harmonica and Steve Wynn on keyboard. > > Robynbs set: > Cynthia Mask > (add Steve and Linda and Victoriabs bass player) > Robyn started walking everyone through the changes for QoE and launched into an improvised song: > I Wish I Looked Like Steve > I Wish I Looked Like Steve (country version) > Queen of Eyes (Linda was great on drumsbawesome version bI wish I was lost, I wish I was found, but > she only wished youbd say something profoundb) > Soul Kitchen (Doors) > (add Howe Gelb) > Street Fighting Man (Stones) > Re-Make/Re-Model (Roxy Music) > (add Victoria on vocal and harmonica) > Dear Prudence (Beatles)bbFor Michele, who is normally hereb&b > Gigolo Aunt (Syd Barrett)bduring the break down at the end of the song, Howe played the guitar riff > from bSatisfactionb while Robyn sang bRebel Rebelbbvery nice > > encore (all): > Golden Years (Bowie) > Kung Fu Fighting (Carl Douglas) mostly acapella (mostly Robyn) plus drums and Steve attempting to add > a Chinese sounding guitar riff and not quite hitting it > > Another very worthwhile drive to Tucson. Not much being said about the Robyn/Joe Boyd shows. I had been tempted to catch one, more to see Joe Boyd than anything, because I really love quite a bit of his work (and I've seen Robyn over 50 times). Still, I'm really looking forward to tonight's Tucson show with Steve Wynn, Howe Gelb, and Victoria Williams. Calexico was supposed to be on the bill for last night or tonight, but since they are touring Canada right now, I guess Joey Burns will have to wait yet again to catch Robyn. Maybe Neko Case will show up again (wish, not rumor). > > I have enjoyed the record club submissions so far, but the last two didn't blow my mind. I hadn't listened to the Monochrome Set before and had been curious about them. Not quite what I expected, guess I was prepared for something a bit more brittle or something. They might require repeated listening to really catch with me--would it be worth the effort? What is THE album from them that would be the best litmus test? > I didn't need to download the Departure Lounge album--already had the CD. It is no danger of getting worn out here. They are a band that I prefer to see live. Without going back and listening to what I have, I can't say if that was the album I would have selected from them, or if I liked the Homer/Tim Keegan & the Homer Lounge material more, but the Too Late to Die Young was a bit low key for me. But I did go back and buy the Jetlag Dreams CD just now... > > I'll let you know about tonight's show later, Marc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Sep 2010 21:42:59 -0700 From: M Holden Subject: Re: Record Club? But I am interested > to know what their subjects are, if it's not too much trouble. not at all. I'd actually been thinking about translating the lyrics, but didn't want to do that without knowing if there's actual interest. I don't have the time for a full translation now, and perhaps it's sufficient to know what the songs are about. All the lyrics in German can be found here: Berlin - basically a love letter to the city. The protagonist arrives at central station and makes her way home, relating what she sees and how it makes her feel at home. The chorus is "I feel good, I dig Berlin". But the song is not just cute; it makes some pointed observations and has a counterculture vibe. Irre (Crazy) - the protagonist is in a bad relationship and the song is addressed to her partner. The chorus is "You'll drive me totally crazy". She complains about his hot-and-cold treatment. After he's slept with a friend of hers, he tells her that "the monogamous times are over" and part of yesterday's morals, but when she stays out overnight he throws a fit. Telepathie - about mind control. The man in the song controls the woman, tells her what to do and she can't help doing what he tells her. Blaue Augen (Blue eyes) - everything in life sucks or doesn't hold an interest anymore, except for his blue eyes. The chorus is "But your blue eyes turn me so sentimental - such blue eyes! When you look at me I don't care about anything else. Your blue eyes are phenomenal. What I feel (when you look at me) is beyond normal" The relative sappiness of the chorus is counterpointed by the acerbic commentary in the verses. This song was a huge hit and probably the first "new wave" song I have ever heard. Hundsgemein (So mean) - the protagonist has a friend, or perhaps a partner or a guy he lives with, who treats him badly. The verses relate the many things he does without the protagonist and the chorus is "That is so mean, so very mean". Luxus (Luxury) - the protagonist talks about luxurious things she would like to do or have. The chorus is "I dig luxury, day and night. I need luxury, day and night." The lyrics are obviously not meant seriously but rather as a criticism of materialism. Rote Liebe (Red Love) - hard to say what this song is about. Sex, money, death, and red images that convey these ideas. Da leg ich mich doch lieber hin (I'd Rather Go To Bed) - life sucks and is pointless. The chorus is "I'd rather go to bed, because nothing makes any sense. I dream that everything turns better, that finally something will happen." Telephon - she's waiting for him to call her and wonders why he doesn't. The chorus is "I'm sitting here next to the phone, from dawn until late at night. I know it's a bad joke what you're doing to me" Roter Rolls Royce (Red Rolls Royce) - things she does in her Red Rolls Royce: "cling to the steering wheel, fly away when he leaves her, when she's alone, she ventures everything and wins, when engine revving blends with music, she drives until the end of time, she acts crazy and drives away, never to return". The last word is "Kamikaze". IMO, many of the songs have a disturbing and unsettling quality. - -- b.
