Not that I'm a big fan of the genre... but this was a great, great movie and part of what made it great was the choreography and editing of the fight scenes. Other things it had going for it: One of Jeff Bridges' first movies (and there was one (prophetic?) scene shot in a bowling alley); One of John Huston's last movies (who knew that John Huston was a pro boxer before going into directing? I did not); magnificent supporting role by Susan Tyrell; great script. (I watched "Fat City" because it was mentioned in the book I read this weekend, "Soldiers of Salamis" by Javier Cercas, and I thought it was a weird coincidence -- the book is set in and around Barcelona but in the final pages they keep talking about Stockton, the city next to the city where I grew up, which is the setting for Fat City.) Speaking of "Fat City" and it's lead actor Jeff Bridges, it should be interesting to see him next year in the remake of True Grit playing Rooster Cogburn. The movie will be based more on the book thenB the 1969 film. One remake I'm not looking forward to seeing though is a remake of the classic Jules Dassin directed 1955 French caper classic Rififi. Al Pacino will play the lead character.
