The Coolidge was a great venue for Robyn, and he really responded with a great, great acoustic show. The sound was perfect, his voice was in great shape, and Robyn's become a really commanding guitarist on his own on the acoustic. I love the Venus 3 records and shows, but I have to say that I enjoy this sort of show more than the full band performance. And he was *on*. Funny, in his element, not forcing the banter but talking a lot and clearly enjoying himself. I thought the highlights of the show were "Ordinary Millionaire" and, very surprising to me, "She Doesn't Exist." I like "She Doesn't Exist" well enough, but it's nothing like a favorite of mine, and I've heard him perform it solo and with a band several times. Nonetheless, this performance completely surprised me and actually had me in tears. He's much more expressive as a guitarist than he used to be, and when he's in the zone and he's singing well, it's something special. Both of these songs were diamonds. For the first half hour or so, it felt a little bit like we were all at the church of Hitchcock; no one made a sound during songs, and even funny songs weren't getting any laughs. There was huge applause after each song, but it was obvious that the Coolidge hadn't managed to bring many non-converts into the show. It seemed to me that once Robyn realized this, he loosened up a bit and really got into just playing for himself, since he knew he already had us. The last hour was magic, every song. A set list -- certainly incomplete and not in order -- below. My only complaint is with the Coolidge for not advertising it well enough to fill the theatre. It seems like it was a smaller venue than the last non-V3 trip through Boston (in Somerville for the "Trains"), and it didn't come close to selling out. But the sound quality and beauty of the place made up for that. About the encore: I liked the "tribute to those who are no longer with us" at the close of the show, though I kind of wish the last song had been an original instead. I would have loved to hear "To Be Human" or "Comme Toujours" or something new and unreleased that he's written in the last two or three years. He must have a pile of new songs by now, as it's been quite a while since they recorded "Oslo." Incomplete set list: Ghost Ship I Got the Hots Museum of Sex Wreck of the Arthur Lee Sounds Great When You're Dead Only the Stones Remain Luckiness Ordinary Millionaire She Doesn't Exist Red Locust Frenzy (stunning) Ole!
