Was just listening to some early Rolling Stones (the only good Rolling Stones, IMO) and thought to myself that I'd love to hear our Robyn cover "I am waiting" (from Aftermath). Then it sddenly occurred to me that - despite occasional hints at some interest in the Stones (both "Captain Dry" and "Rock & Roll toilet" sound heavily influenced, at least in pastiche form, to me), I don't recall him (a) ever having played a stones cover and (b) ever having mentioned them in interviews or similar. Have I missed anyobvious covers or mentions of the RS by RH? And the t-shirt confirms that Keith of "There are no jokes in the Bible" fame is indeed Mr. Richards. But covers? Hmmm.... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2010 09:12:20 -0400 From: Great Quail Subject: Propellor Time For what it's worth, I love Propellor Time. I find the whole album to have a very consistent feel, with Buck's guitarwork and Morris' vocals perfectly integrated into Robyn's sound. While none of the individual highs are as outstanding as the best tracks on "Oslo" and "Tarantula," overall I appreciate this album's more melancholy tone, and I feel there's no single track that's overly gimmicky, throwaway, or hastily-written. (Well...maybe "Evolove.") The additional touches here and there -- the musical saw, the backing vocals, the crickets, the backmasking -- are very welcome; as if Robyn's more interested in the album as a whole as an artistic statement. I also like the *American* feel of the album at times, the alt-country vibe and the occasional dips into a knowingly nostalgic psychedelia. In some ways, I feel this album has a kind of subdued Egyptians sound; but at the same time, Buck's guitar changes the formula -- it feels like a cross between "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Respect." As far as the songs go... I think "Primitive" is the most lovely thing he's written since "Guilford," and I can't believe "Ordinary Millionaire" hasn't been released as a single on some Indie flick that all the kids are buying which suddenly puts Robyn on the map. It's just gorgeous. "Afterlight" makes me very happy, a fine return to form accompanied by a guitar riff pleasantly reminiscent of REM's "Man on the Moon." The more I listen, the more I like "Sickie Boy" as well, which makes a fine pairing in my mind with "Television." If I had to pick one track to ditch, I'd join the general chorus against "Evolove," although unlike many of you, the "high five" lyric makes me cringe. Anyway, I'm pretty happy! Great title, too. And I do not hate on "Luxor." While it had a few awful songs ("Penelope's Angles, ugh!), it never pretended to be a major release, and it does have "Idonia," "Solpadeine," "Maria Lyn," and "Any Corridor," all of which I like just fine. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2010 15:05:14 -0700 From: "Bri N" Subject: Luxor I've said it before and I'll say it again: Luxor is a great album to cook to. - -Nuppy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2010 19:16:54 -0500 From: michael wells Subject: Re: the Propellor Time Sound Stewart "that cone I should have ballooned from Scotland would have looked great in an ash cloud" the Stewartster wrote: > Luxor's one of my favourites. It's got a couple of duff ones on it ("One L"? Oh dear), but "Round Song", "Idonia" and "Solpadeine" are spiffy. You can keep it my friend, I can do without 'confessional' Robyn. It always sounded like a Joni Mitchell album to me. SPOOKED has one of his best songs "Television," making it mandatory, even if the rest of it is a bit daft.
