Agreed with the comments below about "Luxor." It's got great songs (at least nine), great sound. "The Sound of Sound," "Idonia," "Solpadeine," and the title track are top-notch Hitchcock songs. "Penelope's Angles," "Round Song," "You Remind Me of You," "The Wolf House," and, yes, "One L" are also excellent. I find four songs disappointing -- "The Idea of You" (though I love the lyrics), "Keep Finding Me," "Maria Lyn," and "Ant Corridor" -- but that's not bad at all, especially for a semi-official album. I love this record for the guitar playing. Robyn's a hugely underrated guitarist, and this is one of the few studio recordings that shows off his acoustic playing. And he has a great acoustic sound here. As much as I love "Trains" and "Eye," "Luxor" has a better guitar sound, and he's improved a great deal as a guitarist since those earlier records. The guitar part on "Sound of Sound" is just fantastic up against the vocals, "Luxor" the song is far and away my favorite of all his instrumentals, and there are wonderful bits all the way through: the bubbling at the end of "You Remind Me of You," the slide of "Solpadeine." As for the criticism of "One L" . . . well, it's a romantic song. I think it's catchy as hell, and I love the hand claps, and except for one line where he lapses into cliche ("you fall around me in a perfect harmony"), I think it's a rare, successful upbeat love song, the sort of thing Lennon was trying to do with all the "Oh! Yoko" and "Dear Yoko" songs, which really were awful. I think it's even more successful than "I Feel Beautiful" in getting across the feeling of not-young love. A flower growing in the ice. It all comes down to there being no accounting for taste, I guess, but anyway "Luxor" is far from a disappointment for this listener. I find "Sophia/Bram" (bad production) and "Nextdoorland" (great playing, weak songs) to be disappointments, though I know people who love those records. Jim From: "Stewart C. Russell" Yep. Luxor's one of my favourites. It's got a couple of duff ones on it ("One L"? Oh dear), but "Round Song", "Idonia" and "Solpadeine" are spiffy. That album got me through a very rough employment situation. I'm very glad it's around. Stewart

I'm not really seeing continua in Robyn's work, either. If I have to pick out favourite albums, they would have to be A Can of Bees, Element of Light, Queen Elvis, Moss Elixir, ... and then it gets a bit fuzzy in the last decade. The one thing I've definitely noticed from this list is that if you write, play and/or record music, it's highly likely that you like IODOT (and to a lesser extent, Eye).
