Specifically, Title Mournful Syd I like it 1. "Star of Venus" a bit a bit 2. "The Afterlight" a whole lot 3. "Luckiness" strongly sort of 4. "Ordinary Millionaire" yes a whole lot 5. "John In The Air" so much not at all 6. "Propellor Time" so much a bit not at all 7. "Primitive" yes strongly a whole lot 8. "Sickie Boy" a bit 9. "Born On The Wind" a bit a whole lot 10. "Evolove" a bit (Hoping the table formatting comes through -- I did it in notepad, the columns do not look right in my mail client but maybe they will in yours.) Hm, so maybe not "in common" -- those are just two attributes that spring to mind when I'm listening to the record. And not much correspondence between these attributes and how much I end up liking the song, although the two songs that I am calling the most mournful are the two I don't like -- but two of my favorite tracks are mournful also. Four songs that I like a whole lot, that's nothing to sneeze at. I don't dig this record as much as I did either "Oslo" or "Tarantula" but nor would I characterize it as a clunker. It vexes me that the two songs I don't like at all are right smack dab in the middle of the record, and that one of them is the title track. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 17:51:00 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: the Propellor Time sound On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 4:51 PM, Jeremy Osner wrote: > I don't dig this record as much as I did either "Oslo" or "Tarantula" > but nor would I characterize it as a clunker. I'm about 2/3 of the way through my first listen, and the one that stood out to me was "John in the Air." Hm. First listen caveats of course hugely apply here. But I do think I'm not going to like it as much as its two V3 predecessors, but I also think it's worlds better than the LUXOR/SPOOKED trough, and I plan to keep on listening. later, Miles - -- over a year of feeling guilty about not blogging enough! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 20:50:28 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: the Propellor Time sound On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 5:51 PM, Miles Goosens wrote: > On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 4:51 PM, Jeremy Osner wrote: > > I don't dig this record as much as I did either "Oslo" or "Tarantula" > > but nor would I characterize it as a clunker. Is that what Robyn tells us (as he reads the credits at the end of "Sickie Boy") that we've been listening to? Has anybody got the know-how to figure out what RH is saying backwards at the beginning of "Born on the Wind"? (Sylvia and I were listening to that song in the car the other day and she asked, "Isn't The Da Vinci Code some kind of book?" Yeah... and I hadn't noticed the reference in the lyric... took me another listen or two to figure out he is talking about The Da Vinci Cod.) "What you call 'faith', I call Mum and Dad", or "what you call 'fate'"? Granted the song's title is "Afterlight" though I've seen at least one reviewer (who apparently did not have access to the album sleeve?) call it "Afterlife" (and though I called it that myself the first time I referenced it), I'm pretty sure the lyric is sometimes "I'm gonna see you in the afterlight" and sometimes "in the afterlife". Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2010 13:31:53 -0400 From: Jeremy Osner Subject: Dating the singer, dating the song My perception that "Sickie Boy" would be a way better song if it were on BSDR (or EBHOD) led me to wonder if there are any similarly anachronistic tunes in the RH catalog -- the only one I can think of is "De Chirico" street (a fave), which continually surprises me by not being on Globe of Frogs... Let us divide the man's career thus far into the following eras (or if you prefer a different division, well bring it on): 1, Soft Boys 2. Early 80's solo 3. Egyptians (and Eye) 4. Mid-90's - Early 00's solo (and Nextdoorland) 5. Venus 3 Re. clunkers, the only RH record I have listened to and not liked is "Luxor" (well, and "Robyn Sings"; but I have a strong feeling I should give that another chance). I have not listened to "You & Oblivion", "Obliteration Pie", "A Can of Bees", "Groovy Decay", "Side 3", "Shadow Cat"; as far as I know any of these could be bad -- though I have strong doubts as to the lameness of several of those titles.
