The artwork thing was sort of an accident-- when the first song came up as a track from Saint Etienne's FOX BASE ALPHA, I remembered that I had a picture of the album cover with the girl's sign lettering deleted and used that for kicks. It's just snowballed from there. I like RESPECT a good deal, too. I like it when it first came out, and have always rated most of the songs highly. The thing that I've always found odd about it is that the production seems to be two ideas at once, not quite meshing: the intimate kitchen thing, and then these big expansive overdubs-- think the strings or calliopes or whatever the hell they are on "Yip", and those big bells and massive fake kick drums on "Moon Inside". It's not bad production at all-- mind though that I find PI totally listenable-- just a bit schizoid. PROPELLOR TIME is much more what I'd think of if asked to imagine a home-recorded Robyn + band effort. And although PT is a little more cohesive than RESPECT, they feel like pretty good companion pieces to me. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2010 22:37:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Jill Brand Subject: Do It Again guy raising money So if you check this out, you can see how you can donate to the Do It Again documentary AND what you get if you do. Robyn has clearly donated some CDs for a $30 donation, and for $750, you can invite Geoff Edgers and get a private screening! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/775822192/do-it-again-promoti and to get tickets to the event, go here: http://iffboston.bside.com/2010/films/doitagain_iffboston2010 I mean really, guys, we all know how Geoff Edgers feels! We may disagree about whether the Kinks should or should not get together, but we all agree that our lives have always been at least partially guided by them. So come to the Boston show! Moon inside a good example. BUT there are still times when it hits home for me (with the BIG production added to the small recordings. I would love to hear demos pre-big-boomed someday...) Course it's all just personal taste. We all love Robyn's music. I mean is there anything anyone actually hates here? I don't think I can say that I actually hate any Robyn songs (produced or non-produced) - -Nuppsy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2010 21:09:21 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V18 #72 On Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 8:24 PM, Bri N wrote: > > Well, I'll admit the big expansive overdubs do not date well. But in contrast with that, the quieter parts of the song are pretty devastating. I like this one a lot. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 08:57:21 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V18 #72 On Apr 12, 2010, at 9:09 PM, Rex wrote: > > Nope, I don't "hate" a single song, or, really, a single recording. My first thought was maybe something very quiet was going on, so I turned my volume way up, but nothing; so I got worried that maybe Robyn had recorded The Answer I'd been looking for all these years, but had done so at a frequency to which I was not sensitive. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2010 14:00:14 +0100 From: Charlotte Subject: You too can have tentacles in your soup...
