He said 3 not 7! :) But I must agree whole hearted with you. That IS the streak for me. And I like Decay too (but it should've been produced by New Musik's Tony Mansfield...). BSDR is #1 for me. Love Vince Ely's drums... I love the flip flop raw production. Fegmania has more polished flip flop production and I love it too. Robyn's entire catalog is pretty solid, actually. He has a very distinct powerful style. Matthew's bass and Vince's drums are a savage combo. I know I came along at the time of Queen Elvis, so would include that in there even though alot of you have ended your streaks at Globe Of Frogs. But the clunkers.....now there's something we can agree on, right?? :-) Here's my list...these are ones that I rarely if ever still listen to: Soft Boys - Invisible Hits Respect (sure PI was slick, but this thing was another story entirely....wine glasses? wafflehead?) Luxor Spooked It's too early to lump Propellor Time in there, but I'm tempted. After Tarantula and Oslo (and after 2 listens), this thing is a letdown. I guess I don't love the Basement Tapes enough. I'd rather hear Robyn use that insanely great backing band to RAWK OUT. I really have never counted Luxor as anything other than the odds 'n' installment between Robyn Stings (or Star for Bram?) and Shadowcat... I'm surprised so many Fegs slot it in amongst the propler LPs. I can kinda see why, but I don't swing that way m'self. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2010 06:22:32 +0100 (GMT+01:00) From: "edwardofsim@tiscali.co.uk" Subject: Re: clunkers jbj@tuthorse.net said: >I like the 3-LP stretch thread, but figure that alot of people favor their >"jumping-in points". Dude, Respect is my absolute favourite Egyptians album, and I rate it amongst Robyn's best overall. What's wrong with wine glasses? And Wafflehead? Sure, no masterpiece, but enough to bring the whole album down? Reminds of Beefheart, myself. Luxor definitely weakest Robyn album for me. (Rex, care to expand on your statement about this record -- was it really just an odds 'n' sods record, I thought it was a "real" LP by the man. I'd be definitely pleased to find out I was wrong.) Now, Soft Boys Invisible Hits *is* just a compilation, right? So shouldn't be judged as an album proper. But I have to say, I really like that very much as well, there are no tracks on it I don't like. It was part of my first wave of Robyn discovery, and I still absolutely adore Wey-Wey-Hep-A-Hole and Have a Heart Betty. And others. He's A Reptile. Awesome. :-) And oh my goodness, Love Poisoning and Empty Girl are on there. Definite un-clunker! I'm extremely lukewarm over Moss Elixir (and Mossy Liquor). Slightly warmer on Jewells / Star, but only slightly. Spooked, I'm meant to like, but can only barely tolerate it more than Luxor. For me he finally found his way back with the Venus 3, after a long period of meandering. Who asked me? Oh, I guess you guys did. peace, Edward ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 2010 10:49:53 +0100 From: hssmrg@bath.ac.uk Subject: Respect Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2010 19:46:19 -0400 From: ART ROCK POSTER Subject: Re: Two vinyl questions one time at band camp, gene@hopstetter.com (gene@hopstetter.com) said: 2. For me, Propellor Time is the best of the three, narrowly beating out Ole! I also think these three records have three of his best album closers, in "NY Doll," "Goodnight Oslo," and "Evolove." "NY Doll" seems to me unique in Robyn's canon. I can't think of any other song of his that's biographical (maybe there are some, but not biographies of well-known figures?) -- though the song works on other levels as well. "Oslo" is also unique, though it's much harder to pin down exactly what it's doing. I get a creepy, hollow, scared feeling from that song that I can only compare to something like "The Black Crow Knows" (it makes me think of the Bergman film, The Hour of the Wolf, actually). And "Evolove" is my song of the year; I think it's one of his only successful topical/political songs, and, as I think someone else mentioned, it succeeds because there's a generosity to it that's usually missing when he's trying to make a statement ("Legalized Murder," "Watch Your Intelligence"). And it's a gorgeous, gorgeous tune, of course. Just my thoughts. I love the new album and can't help hoping that another will be on the way before long, since these songs were recorded four years back. Spine Date: Mon, 5 Apr 2010 08:16:00 -0700 From: Rex Subject: RH three-album streak? So I'm rating Propellor Time as the 3rd top-tier RH record in a row. And I started to try to figure out if that's ever happened before (excluding live records and comps and such). In my book, the only other time this has happened was Can of Bees/Underwater Moonlight/BSDR. The Egyptians records are broken up in one direction or another by one relatively "just okay" record in the middle of the classics; the truly great solo records tend to be relative peaks in relative valleys. What's your favorite RH 3-consecutive-LPs run? - - -Rex
