The setting is in NYC, I was going to say the Upper West Side but I (strongly) don't want the dream to be "Seinfeld." Possibly Chelsea. They are shopping at a small grocery store owned by a British guy who is maniacal in a very frosty, reserved way and who presses a can of cat food on the Japanese friend with the intent that he should feed the cat, the grocery store owner has constructed an image of the Japanese friend as a Samurai figure and wants to understand the Zen of Cat Feeding; he is subsequently critical of the execution of the feeding. Later on the two are back in the grocery store and the owner has brought in a Zen master to demonstrate proper cat feeding for the Japanese friend. He performs the ritual and it is magnificent to watch -- this is the centerpiece of the episode. There is also a subplot in the tail end of the show with nobody understanding why the two spent such a long time at the grocery store when they just went to pick up a quart of milk or whatever.
