I know that if your writing promotional copy you have to exaggerate at times a bit, but What the Fuck? Peter Buck appears on non-R.E.M. albums about as rarely as the sun rises. Since 2000, he's appeared on three times as many albums with Scott McCaughey on Yep Roc* as R.E.M. studio albums. *The Venus 3 [3, including Propellor Time], The Baseball Project [1], The Minus 5 [4], and Young Fresh Fellows [1]. Alice's father, Silas Peattie, died yesterday of cancer. He was 86. Any messages of condolence should go to Alice at . Silas was a delightful raconteur with a keen memory and wealth of general knowledge, and a sparkle in his eye. I shall long treasure his tales of his life, his wartime experiences in Italy, and his recollections of family history. Sadly, I was not able to offer Alice any comfort at her time of greatest need. Alice and I have split up after twelve and a half years together, and the split was entirely my fault. I can offer no excuses and no explanation - I have simply flushed away the best thing I had in my life. The actual event which led to this split has led me to seek medical treatment, and it seems as if I am suffering from some neurological or psychological problem. The tentative prognosis is that I have some form of temporal lobe epilepsy, though other possibilities - some far more dire - have not been ruled out as yet. I feel as if someone has removed the floorboards from under my feet, and I will have to rebuild the foundations from scratch. Sympathy should be primarily with Allie, though, rather than with me - she has put up with me for longer that was reasonable, and has her own heartbreaks to deal with.
