Any other US fegs heard this - >perhaps this is an NZ-specific locution? Definitely hear this one here in the UK as well (e.g., "...is critically ill following a car crash"), and I often think the same thing, although I have to say my impression has always been that the newsfolks were reporting the statement as provided by the hospital in these situations, so it may not be the media so much as it is some kind of healthcare terminology. Quick 'define' request in Google (yes, I know, not the most authoritative source necessarily) provides several applicable definitions, such as: "affected by an impairment of normal physical or mental function" "Trouble; distress; misfortune; adversity; Harm or injury;..." Based on the above, it seems more like the media in question are using the word "ill" perfectly acceptably, but we are colloquially associating the word more specifically with disease, which isn't necessarily the only appropriate use, and again I suspect this is the hospitals' usage rather than the news media's. Shutting up now. peace, Edward ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 2010 17:13:47 +0000 From: Steve Sonoras Subject: It looks like "Propellor" will be spinning stateside after all... I found a little surprise when I checked out the YepRoc website today: take a look under the new releases bar on the left edge of the screen. When I clicked on the album's pre-order link (as of noon today) an error message came up, but this is clearly enough indication they are going to release the record after all. Perhaps the Facebook coup really worked.
