I take it that you're saying that he hadn't performed that particular vocalization before... because he's performed the song itself before. later, Miles - -- over a year of feeling guilty about not blogging enough! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 2010 19:50:44 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Martinverse Jeanne, - -- djini@voicenet.com is rumored to have mumbled on 7. I had that idea myself, but never followed through on it. > I'm up for some > affectionate nitpicking while we wait for GRRM. What's on your radar > Sebastian? Well, fortunately these wouldn't count as spoilers, IMO ... In "A Feast For Crows" GRRM suddenly changes the chapter rules in that there are chapters that don't have the narrator's name as title, but instead his or her role. Mostly these are one-offs, i.e. there is only (ever?) one chapter told from their perspective. Except for Prologues and Epilogues that never happened in the previous volumes. Of course he's free to do what he wants, but I think I would've liked it better if he had stuck to the established paradigm. Another thing I noticed is that all of a sudden several characters start to use the expression "for half a groat I would ...". It would've been perfectly fine if one character, preferably a new one, would say that, but when it's all over the place it feels as though it's just an expression that GRRM himself fell in love with ... The final thing I've been thinking about is whether the sex scenes aren't awfully male-oriented. True, you could argue that it's always the character's perspective we're getting, but then it's a bit conspicuous that it's always the men who describe those scenes. IIRC Arianne is the only woman who ever really thinks about sex, and then it's far less detailed than with some of the men. It's not that I mind personally, it's more that I somehow want these books to be perfect and unassailable, and that's something that might make them a target from certain corners. As I said, this is all nitpicking and probably overthinking things. On a less cerebral level, I just noticed that parts of the third and the fourth volume didn't quite grab me as much as the earlier ones. I guess the reason is that there are ever more balls to juggle, and at times it becomes tiresome to keep straight where each one is at any given time.
