If it's an employer, PDF is probably okay unless they have particular forms to fill out. If it's an agency, they'll likely insist on a Word file, as they will likely reformat into their standard template to present it to their clients. As a serial job-changer, and one who has used the same Plain TeX template for his resume since 1993 (and I have the all the changes checked into RCS ...), Word is a pain. I usually just paste the text copied from a PDF into Word, then make some edits to make it legible. (I once got rid of an annoying agency - who wouldn't stop bugging me for a resume in Word for a job I didn't want - by making a Word document containing just bitmap images of the PDF pages. They stopped.) Good luck, keep trying, don't give them any reason not to hire you, and remember - if they want to interview you, they want to hire you. And so I shall: It seems to be that since pdf is more or less universal, and .doc was not specified (and is a nearly deprecated format by now for Word anyway), .pdf would make very good sense...not to mention avoiding formatting incompatibilities should the font you use be absent or some such (and since Word changed its default font, that's entirely possible, at least going to older versions from newer). - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 2009 02:09:54 -0500 From: lep Subject: Re: 1-800-FEG-TECH Stewart says: > As a serial job-changer, and one who has used the same Plain TeX > template for his resume since 1993 aaaaahhhh, stewart hardly ever flirts with me. > Good luck, keep trying, don't give them any reason not to hire you, and > remember - if they want to interview you, they want to hire you. fortunately, i'm unambitious for the time being - i just want a part-time job and private tutoring seems to be the way to go. also, there's a bunch of these "Your Child Can Spend All His Extra Time at Our Centre, Learning His Double Integrals, so He Can Get into the College of Your [i.e. the parent's] Choice." A high-school math teacher in Lancaster told me they're trying to take teaching proofs out of Geometry - just means triple the cash in 15 years. To expand: every year since (I think) 2000, RH has turned up at the Fleece and Firkin in Bristol with some sort of a band or other. The one just before the Soft Boys reformed was especially good, and there were several others, including two(?) Soft Boys gigs, two gigs with the American band and a revived IODOT gig featuring his sisters as well as Terry Edwards & co. I have just looked on the website for next month, and the only gigs advertised are: 20 Jan 2010 20:00 Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, UK 21 Jan 2010 20:00 Brighton Dome, Brighton, UK 22 Jan 2010 20:00 Barbican Centre, London, UK 23 Jan 2010 20:00 Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry, UK Cape Farewell: Shift 30 Jan 2010 20:00 Queen Elizabeth Hall/Southbank Centre, London, UK Humph! - - - Mike Godwin As far as I understand it, these gigs are the Nick Drake tribute shows and a proper tour in support of Propellor Time is tba for April. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 2009 09:29:32 -0800 From: Carrie Galbraith Subject: Re: 1-800-FEG-TECH On Dec 28, 2009, at 6:59 PM, lep wrote: > Does anyone know if it's considered impolitic to send a resume as a > *.pdf file if a *.doc file is not specified? > > It's been so long since I had to format something in Word that I > actually forgot what a pain in the ass it is. > I refuse to accept .doc files from anyone (students) precisely because of the formatting and other issues I get - i.e.: various versions of MSWord, variety of operating systems, blah, blah, blah. I would love nothing more than to pursue a Ph.D. in, specifically, the history of the book. Alas, the only 2 real programs are in Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland. Yes it is. That's just mho. When I got laid off before Thanksgiving one recruiter asked for my resume in Word because of an in-house parser they had. Otherwise I think the PDF is perfectly legit for most of the reasons posted here. And it's entirely coincidence that the recruiter w the Word doc was the one to land me my current job. - -f. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 07:50:53 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Margrave Subject: REAP Rowland S.
