A modest yet high quality haul this year. Highlights: - - A gift basket from the Bear Republic Brewery, including a Racer 5 shirt, pint glasses, coasters, and tap handle for my kegerator. - - Rhino's "Where The Action Is" 4-disc collection, which details the hipster LA music scene circa 1965-68. - - Jim Marshall's photo collection, "Trust", the cover photo of which was shot a mere three miles from my current dwelling (long before I moved here). Great dinner, wine, Wii tournaments, and the joy of seeing an eight year-old's face light up repeatedly. Cheers everyone! - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Dec 2009 13:21:33 -0500 From: Jeremy Osner Subject: Re: post for the lonely On Sat, Dec 26, 2009 at 3:35 AM, lep wrote: > p.s. it's the 26th. start posting your loot lists. Loot: a board game that looks interesting, have not played it yet. Sort of a 6X6 tic tac toe, except pieces of the board move as part of the course of play. A mix tape with some fantastically good contemporary covers of old blues tunes. A check from my parents which will be used to equip our household with a new computer. Some candy from my uncle. A beautiful old edition of Josi Ramon Jiminez' "La estacisn total con las canciones de la nueva luz" -- modernist poetry that looks nice and cryptic and is apparently named after a surveying instrument. In something of a surprise, my family went in on this and bought me a Champion Juicer! Off to buy carrots right now! I got it for Christmas (no, I didn't race out to buy it), so I've only listened to it once. I don't think it is earth-shattering, but, in that I am someone who loves choral music, I quite like it. Do You Remember Walter, Big Sky, and Picture Book are my favorites from this first listening. I am astounded at how good Ray still sounds, although I guess these days it is very easy to touch up someone's voice electronically. I would like to have seen one of the concerts with a choir when he toured recently, but Boston wasn't so lucky. There is a really good story (almost 7 minutes long) called "What It's Like to Sing with Ray Davies" from NPR's All Things Considered. It is part interview with Ray and part "confession" of a classical singer with an amateur group called the Dessoff Choirs. The latter (Jeff Lunden) talks about what it was like singing this repertoire with Ray in NYC at Town Hall.
