I reiterate my previous remark that this is classically how the Whedon/Fox scenario plays out - the show takes enough time to build up reaction mass, dramatically speaking, that the suits upstairs don't see the numbers they want and pull the plug, which is exactly when the shit *really* gets good. I'd like to see the guy go to some kind of subscription model - publish a prospectus, raise money from fanbase/investors, put up the work on a dedicated website as it's produced, *then* sell DVDs/let interested network types have access to the completed project on an all-or-nothing basis. But I would, wouldn't I? I think Topher's sociopathic traits are actually more sociapathic-seeming traits that seem prevalent in the prototypical young scientist -- emphasis on the young. One of the things about his character is that he only recently came to face personal ethical dilemmas, and he's come through acting almost entirely human. Also, Topher definitely displays symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome which tends to make people not play well with others. And I don't want to be intimate with him - I want us to go raid his draw of inappropriate carbs and then run around the couches playing paintless paintball. > I reiterate my previous remark that this is classically how the Whedon/Fox > scenario plays out - the show takes enough time to build up reaction mass, > dramatically speaking, that the suits upstairs don't see the numbers they > want and pull the plug, which is exactly when the shit *really* gets good. > I'd like to see the guy go to some kind of subscription model - publish a > prospectus, raise money from fanbase/investors, put up the work on a > dedicated website as it's produced, *then* sell DVDs/let interested network > types have access to the completed project on an all-or-nothing basis. > Something like that. I was just saying to someone that it would have have been a fairly reasonable and similar decision to pull the plug on Buffy or Angel at 1.5 seasons in - although maybe those shows had the ratings. I would say other than Firefly, Mr. Whedon's shows really take time to turn amazing. One of those most intriguing aspects of Dollhouse I've found is how interested I've become in Adele and Topher, and much less in the actives. I do want to know how the actives got to the Dollhouse, what made them sign their lives away, but the really interesting questions to me is how do the people in charge handle the situation in the house as things get uglier and uglier from up high. > But I gotta say, I love watching actors having as much fun as Alan Tudyk. > (Who loved him in Death At a Funeral?) But nobody's watching it! Seriously, with those numbers Fox had no other choice. I read an interview recently where Joss said that *now* he gets that he should probably have turned to a cable network. Maybe he would've if Eliza Dushku hadn't had that development deal with Fox. > But I gotta say, I love watching actors having as much fun as Alan Tudyk. > (Who loved him in Death At a Funeral?) Did you see the unaired episode "Epitaph One"? Topher is a sociopath on the surface, but with some vestiges of a conscience underneath. When something gets through the former to reach the latter, it isn't pretty, but his misery IS quite watchable. That would be nice, if the fans could raise enough money. But leaving Joss aside for a moment, I'd like to see *all* of cable TV revamp-- er, revised so that you only pay for shows that you watch. Forget a la carte, where you get to pick individual channels instead of buying packages. I want SUPER a la carte, where you pick the individual shows you want to see. Instead of subscribing to Fox, you could just subscribe to Dollhouse and not have to pay for 24 or American Idol. Kinda like the iTunes store, except hopefully cheaper. Then we could see which popular shows are *really* loved, and which are just watched because they're there and already paid for. > But I gotta say, I love watching actors having as much fun as Alan Tudyk. > (Who loved him in Death At a Funeral?) I did. The movie as a whole was just a traditional farce, but executed pretty well, especially after the first half-hour (which I imagine is the part that put Lauren to sleep). Actually, I think he probably speaks with the accent all the time. He's lived in the UK for years, even if he is here for work. Not sure what is "home" for them but like a few of my friends who are ex- pats, he's picked up the accent of his foreign residence. After 6 months in Belfast I found myself quickly picking up an accent and automatically answering "aye" instead of yes. A year there and I'd have sounded local. - - c ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 2009 00:57:29 -0800 From: kevin studyvin Subject: Re: Bored now. I never really understood what was going on with that. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #309 ********************************
