["Brian Huddell" Subject: Mono, Mono I know we went round and round (sorry, "Ratt" was the answer to a clue in the NYT Crossword yesterday, and I can't get that song out of my melon) about the Beatles stereo V. mono. Thanks to largesse from my workplace and generous birthday gifts, I received both box sets. I've been living in the Mono set for about six weeks now. No detriment to the wonders of the Stereo set, but... the Mono set is the real deal. I had always had problems with the quality of the early back catalog-- the recordings always sounded tinny, rather than twangy. Now, the twang is back. I now understand what Lennon meant when he said Sgt. Pepper needs to be heard in mono. The way his vocals and Ringo's drums dance around each other in "A Day In The Life" totally explained it to me. I just finished Season 1. But, I tell you, this is one relentlessly sad show. It's just so...godless. It's not that it doesn't address The Big Questions of time and space and love and death and myth. It's that no one on the inside knows it -- the only big stakes are things that don't matter, and the things that matter are discarded with barely a thought. I think it makes me sad in the way that America makes me sad. Which I know might well be the point. At any rate, thanks for the ongoing recommendations. It really is an amazing show, and I'm glad to have taken FegAdvice once more. as ever, Lauren, awaiting Season 2, Disc 1 - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 2009 12:24:18 +1300 From: James Dignan Subject: Reap Eric Woolfson (of Alan Parsons Project), 64 James - -- James Dignan, Dunedin, New Zealand -.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.-=-.- =-.-=-.-=-.- You talk to me as if from a distance .-=-.-=-.-=-. -=-.
