Well, I saw it in the theater... Have not watched the film of it yet tho. Should I? I loved the concert but was put off from the film by some feg email detracting it. IIRC. Off topic, your email address brings to mind: I was watching tapes of musical guests on the Ed Sullivan Show last night on PBS, and somehow the thought kept running through my head, Oh I wish I could listen to a cover of this song by the Soft Boys. Particularly I was wishing that WRT "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying". You might add in the Monkees' "Pleasant Valley Sunday". Sunbday afternoons are the times when most think of lazing a day away. If there's any song pairs for Kinks songs, I'd go with "Apeman" vs Hotlegs' "Neanderthal man" (not just theme, but melody and rhythm) and "Dead end street" vs Martin Newell's "Street called Prospect" (the latter seems to be almost a direct updating). I'm hooked. It doesn't all work, that's true, but the sheer force of influences that have been melded together here is overwhelming. The bastard som of Adrian Belew and Cream-era Jack Bruce playing a grunge Astronomy Domine and Reznor-produced Bowie covers with Ray Manzarek gets you part way to the sound of some of the tracks, but is an inadequate description. 8/10, plus one extra point for sheer chutzpah. If they got Belew on board for the next album, they could get close to 10. If they got Belew on > board for the next album, they could get close to 10. I'm still warming up to it as a whole, but I really like Scumbag Blues in particular. I think Homme is the weak link here as for the most part his playing and singing are overpowered by the bombast of Grohl and Jones. I saw them in Oakland two weeks ago and despite my reservations about the album the show was phenomenal. Just watching Grohl go crazy for 90 minutes was worth the price of admission. - -tc ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #300 ********************************
