I haven't noticed it. thanks for posting this. i read it fairly shortly after his death - a fair amount of his writing starting surfacing around then; IMO, this is the one that's essential to read. i hadn't noticed any particular influence, but it's been a number of years since i've read vonnegut. and wallace wrote this while he was at amherst, so he was young and 20 and such. what i most noticed about the piece was that, after i finished it, i no longer wondered why he killed himself. this is someone who knew way too much about major depression. now i know hindsight is 20/20 and such, but i still think i would have noticed how that the distance between the author and the subject was glaringly thin -- i imagine especially because of his age at the time that he wrote it. xo p.s. interesting time - i am just re-reading the luxury cruise essay. - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 2009 19:53:01 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: RE: Who do you know? ...AND 4-time All-Star second baseman (in his 10-year career)...Man, when I was a kid, he and Kessinger OWNED that middle of the Wrigley infield. The NME has revealed their top 100 albums of the noughties. Some interesting stuff in there like Frightened Rabbit and (a personal favourite) The Great Eastern by The Delgados. For me it's a pretty good list until it gets to the top 30 or so when it starts to fall apart a bit. And number 1 is The Strokes which I find a bit 'meh'. Dunno what I was thinking when I missed out on all that great Chemikal Underground stuff that was around when I was in Scotland. Alun's solo album is great.
