One was "California Stars", which I've heard but never played and turns out to be a completely natural sound for me -- like I put my bow on the strings and the tune comes out of the box of my violin with no conscious intervention on my part, and the other I did not know but was pretty easy to pick up. So: looks like another group it's time for me to start listening to more... Did not know I could play that on violin but I apparently can. I can pretty much unreservedly recommend the new live R.E.M. double-CD set. For one thing, they pull a whole bunch of fantastic older songs out of mothballs (nearly every track from _Chronic Town_ forchrissakes), and they sound great. Even the stuff from lesser albums actually works pretty well in context. This was recorded (as many of you probably know) as open rehearsals in Dublin prior to recording _Accelerate_ - and while that album isn't quite as triumphant as we would have hoped, maybe, it's a hell of a lot better than we would have expected. In some ways these rawer versions of the newer songs are a bit closer to that. And note that I'm rarely a fan of live albums in the first place... - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #283 ********************************
