I'm very glad I made the effort to go, not only because of the high entertainment value for my dollar, but also to see the best fegs in the land. Also, I second Mr. Clark's nomination of Rieflin, mostly because I'm scared of fighting him. My favorite part of the show was how happy they all seemed (even Rieflin, who while stony-faced for much of the proceedings, often seemed to be suppressing a smile and even actually grinning at one point). Robyn just looked comfortable, playful and confident. It was really nice to see, particularly the playful part. I haven't been an active Robyn fan for quite a while, and don't own his last three albums. I have to say, though, that all the "new" songs were surprisingly good (surprising to me, anyway), and some of them made me think I need to get ahold of those albums. That in itself was exciting, because I never expected to like his newer work after Luxor left me cold. On Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 8:36 AM, Tom Clark wrote: > Great set from the boys last night! I know some folks aren't that fond of Spooked - I think it's a fine album - but the two V3 albums are definitely in the mode of prime Robyn, so yeah: you should get them. I know some folks aren't that fond of > Spooked - I think it's a fine album - Awww, it's sweet when you think of me! I do think SPOOKED is way better than LUXOR, and yes, that's damning with faint praise. I do think "Flanagan's Song" is terrific and makes great use of Robyn's current range, as opposed to trying to scale his upper register of the '70s and '80s. But that's about all the good things I have to say about it. I almost turned in my Hitchcock Fanclub membership card after SPOOKED, but I think seeing the mighty fine setlists he was playing in every town other than Nashville gave me hope that he was still in touch with the wellsprings of his best material. OLE TARANTULA and especially GOODNIGHT OSLO (still a contender for my #1 of 2009), plus that great V3 Exit/In show back in April, have made me glad that I didn't give up hope. later, Miles - -- now with blogspot retsin! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 2009 17:54:56 -0700 (PDT) From: xx Subject: Re: NEW on DiME:Robyn Hitchcock & V3, LA, 10/6/09 That was a very fun show. Robyn didn't speak as much, but he was the most energetic I think I have very seen him. Fun bits for me, the R.E.M. geek: - -At the bar, before the show, there was only 1 bartender. She was incredibly busy. My friend and I were trying to get her attention, when I noticed Scott McCaughey standing a few feet away. A few minutes later, I could see Peter Buck in the mirror. He made his way to the bar. I still had not even placed an order with the bartender. I look over, and Peter is trying to get the bartenders attention. Finally he pulls out a wad of cash and starts shaking it at her. Now she takes his order, ahead of us, mind you. No problem. - -We sat down next to the opening bands' (Parson Red Heads) merch table. After their set, Peter walks up and asks me if I'm selling the stuff. The guy selling and Peter strike up a little conversation. Peter buys a few of their cds. The guy asks "What's your name?" Peter replies, "Peter. I'm in Robyn's band". I had to keep from laughing out loud. He leaves, and I tell the merch guy who 'Peter' is. The guy had no idea. - -After the show, Peter came back, with a stack of CD's. He was hawking the new Minus 5 cd "Butchered Covers" for $10 each. I went up, gave him a twenty. He did not have change. So, I bought 2. We shook hands to seal the deal. A friend of mine was at his first Robyn Hitchcock show. He loved, loved, loved it. From the opening strains of IODOT, he was hooked.... enough rambling, I'm off to see Motorhead (really). - -g ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 2009 21:10:18 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: NEW on DiME:Robyn Hitchcock & V3, LA, 10/6/09 On Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 7:54 PM, xx wrote: > > -We sat down next to the opening bands' (Parson Red Heads) merch table. > After their set, Peter walks up and asks me if I'm selling the stuff. Could it be that all has been forgiven? Also, though sans glasses, Peter is bearing a striking resemblance to Benjamin Franklin these days. (Right now, the invisibility works only in one direction...which is why *you* could see him. They've been able to get 360 degrees of invisibility only in a very limited range - roughly about the size of an extended middle finger. Which you did not therefore see TC holding up in Mr. Buck's direction all night long.) > > Also, though sans glasses, Peter is bearing a striking resemblance to > Benjamin Franklin these days.
