Recent vinyl purchases - Orson Welles - The Begatting Of the President (political humor c. 1969) Electronic Music - John Cage/Luciano Berio/Ilhan Mimaroglu (on the Turnabout label, one of those clunky old 60s-era discs that weighs a couple of pounds) Vangelis - Beaubourg (the only thing he's done that I've actually liked) Isaac Stern/Leonard Bernstein - Bartok, Two Rhapsodies For Violin & Orchestra; Berg, Violin Concerto Big Band Jazz From the Beginning To the Fifties (a six-disc Smithsonian Library collection that looks like one of those cheesy Time-Life anthologies but was curated by Gunther Schuller and is actually a smokin' little document) The James Gang - Thirds (because in some ways I'll always be a stumblin' dummy lost in the seventies) np: The Pretenders live set from the Pretenders II bonus disc. Since core-sound, church, and sound professionals basically all use the same Panasonic mic elements, they're all going to be much of a muchness. The difference is in the mounts and cabling, and the care in which the bulk mic elements have been matched. The whole enneagram thing strikes me too convoluted yet simplistic to really have any merit. But why would you try to blackmail someone who has already had to deal with the stalker issue in the 80s and 90s AND in the last couple years had that situation with the caretaker at his ranch who was plotting to kidnap his child. You really think once someone has had to deal with the emotional implication that someone was going to take his child for ransom is going to even think about blinking because you might tell people he fucked your girlfriend -- and yes, he may really need the money but THAT'S what really got in this guys craw, that his girlfriend used to screw the man who is still her boss -- a few times a while back? (i find it amusing that the test designer assigned numbers so as to remove bias from having names of the personality types. i can easily rank the numbers "1" to "8" from good to bad (and no, it's not "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.") xo p.s. they say it's "scientifically verified"; i wonder what the fuck that** means (other than they lie.) ** or, rather, what they think it means. - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 2009 11:05:22 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Last 5 records... I've never been real clear on what this enneagram stuff is about other than it seems to be based on somebody's interpretation of Gurdjieff's ideas, about which just let me say that of all the gurus who've ever gurued he's the only one I've come across I could have any respect for, if you go directly to his own writing as opposed to all the muddle-headed crap people have spread about him. I suppose it's because he begins from the premise that life is impossibly hard and there's virtually no hope for human beings individually or collectively except through a lifetime of concentrated, unrelieved spiritual hard labor - no easy answers or fuzzy pink clouds for the big G. (One of Fripp's records incorporates a snippet of Gurdjieff's student J.G. Bennett saying "It is impossible to achieve the aim without suffering," which sums up the matter very nicely.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 2009 11:29:33 -0700 From: kevin studyvin Subject: Re: Last 5 records... > > *Charles Mingus, "The black saint and the sinner lady" - W..T..F..??? > > > Yeah, quite a bit more out there than the other titles on your list. > Probably it'll help if you try to respond emotionally first - Mingus always > brought along a pretty large helping of old-school, gutbucket soul: he > could > be fairly cerebral (uh, this one's based in part on his psychoanalysis > forchrissakes) but never neglected ye olde assemovinge. > Amen.
