Basically, I want to limit the number of items I back up for particular purposes by specifying certain criteria to determine whether they're backed up. This is for my music library. My music is on an external drive, and I have iTunes organize them within the library folder on that drive as follows: [album artist]\[album]\[tk# song title].[ext] So: what I want to back up (or list in some fashion) is: 1. In the iTunes library on that external drive; 2. A folder at the [album] level whose contents have been modified either by adding a file or removing one (this includes files that did not exist at the last backup); 3. Since a particular date. It would seem reasonable that I could do this: all subfolders of [Drive\iTunes LIbrary] that have files within them that have been added or subtracted since Date X. But I can't figure out how to do it! (I know how to do it in Windows...but that helps me not at all!) If it matters, I'm backing up to a second external drive. Whedon's said that there will be more references to the future world as depicted in that ep, and some of its cast will return. Apparently it was made also because (a) the show owed the network an episode for some reason - not really clear on that - and (b) it was made for about half the cost of most the other eps, which demonstrated to the network that that was possible... At first while viewing I thought it was an alternate to the actual last episode - turns out it stands beside it (what I thought were contradictions were just results of me not quite paying close enough attention to the timeline). - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2009 09:13:45 -0400 From: "Stewart C. Every way I know, however, uses the terminal. There is probably a way to use Finder/Automator, but who has time for that shit? Are you backing up everything, but want to only copy the new stuff on subsequent backups? If so, rsync is your friend. Something like: cd /Volumes/External/Wherever_Your-Library_Is_At rsync -av . /Volumes/Backup/Or_Something rsync is adequately picky about file dates. If you're sure you have matching files, you can add the --size-only option, and it will not copy files with the same location and size, but different timestamp. rsync is exceptionally picky about source and destination syntax. Add a trailing / to a path, and it goes into a whole 'nother place. That's why you want to use rsync's --dry-run option, which merely shows you which files it would move. rsync is amazing. You can get it to move whole filesystems across networks by only moving the stuff that differs. > [album artist]\[album]\[tk# song title].[ext] Oh, bless! He used the MS-DOS directory separators; quaintness! > 3. Since a particular date. Does a file exist which has this date? If not, you can make it: touch -t YYYYMMDDhhmm.ss marker_file Then you can use: cd /Volumes/External/Wherever_Your-Library_Is_At find . -type f -newer marker_file -print0 |\ xargs -0 tar cf - |\ tar xvf - -C /Volumes/Backup/Or_Something > If it matters, I'm backing up to a second external drive. It's hard enough to convince my snobbish friends to listen to his offbeat (how I loathe that term...sorry Robyn) music to begin with, but it's even more difficult to convince them to pick up his records when their covers make Metallica discs look museum-worthy. His newest release, the Trains live record, is no exception--it looks like it was slapdashed in Word minutes before deadline (wasn't it supposed to come out this month anyway?) When I visited the YepRoc website the morning the disc was officially announced, my eyes mistook it for a Melissa Ferrick concert album. What happened to the detailed, well-arranged neo-dada landscapes of Globe of Frogs and Gotta Let This Hen Out!? It's not just that his covers are garish (though the artwork he provides is often quite nice), it's that the poor design is not (often, though sometimes) representative of the great music within. It looks like ass -- it is something that I would've probably come up with had I been tasked with the assignment. (no artistic talent, and am self-taught on a pirated copy of Photoshop 4.) I think it is safe to say that YepRoc has brought us some of the worst Robyn album covers of his career. Do they just have a horrible art department in general? I don't own alot of YepRoc discs, the ones I do own are mostly re-issues (Billy Bragg and Robyn) so I'm not qualified to make that sweeping judgment. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2009 14:42:02 -0400 From: Jeremy Osner Subject: Re: "Trains in NYC" Artwork OTOH "Goodnight Oslo" is -- so I think -- among the all-time great album covers.
