(please just nod your head here or i'll be compelled to continue explaining myself, and *this* one, dealing in abstractions of reality and such, could get really fucking messy.) i recently watched "incident at loch ness", and i think i'm finally starting to get him. i found it very amusing (definitely recommended.) i mean, this man can keep a *very* straight face while telling a *very* long joke (as aside, much like tarantino and "true romance", herzog wrote but did not direct "incident at loch ness"; if one accepts an argument that "true romance" belongs in tarantino's oeuvre, "incident at loch ness" certainly belongs in herzog's.) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374639/ i don't like all of herzog's fixations, but i absolutely appreciate his fixations, and what he's made of them. he has beautiful calm and clear focus, but i suspect there's more to it than he gives away -- i'm guessing you wouldn't have to dig too deep to find the level at which he becomes batshit-crazy. not to mention that i'm a sucker for the way in which his nihilism borders on being a state of grace. huh. i just realized that i seemed to have crowned him kind of the fox mulder of documentary film-making. xo - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Sep 2009 02:32:21 -0400 From: lep Subject: Re: Further off-topic > Just been giggling at last nite's Craig Ferguson. Well, not with me, but some people are sticklers. Certainly seems to be a full moon tonight, something I always enjoy. Had some old Charlie Parker tunes on a while ago and a car alarm started going off in the parking lot of the Chinese BBQ joint across the street, in key and hitting it right on the one and three. Man, most of those names weren't really bad at all, just odd or gross. (With a few exceptions, like that one with the stupid, meaningless, long acronym.) Now, in high school, I was in a mainstream commercial rock cover band called "Starlite" (name had been chosen and printed on everything before I joined). Now THAT is an awful band name. I refused to play at my high school unless we changed the name, so we never did. *At* my high school there was a rock cover band called "Satin Fog" -- that's pretty bad as well. When I first heard their name, I thought it was "Satin Frog," which I thought was pretty cool. Then I learned the truth. Out of current bands, my daughter is a big fan of a halfway-decent band with what I think is an awfully sucky name: "Cute Is What We Aim For." I agree with them about "The The," and their specific comment that the name is so bad they can't even be searched for on Google.
