That's why it's there. (Just finished. Lots of fun. Kind of like if Firesign Theatre wrote a novel.) It was fabulous. I know that there are some true football fans out there in the fegworld, and I have to recommend (along with all the members of my family and even my dad, who kind of likes football but is not a nut like I am) this documentary. It was made by the same guy who did Atomic Cafe and The War Room. I must confess to a little Harvard bias on my part, but it is a great tale of a great game. The interviews that didn't make it into the actual film (they are extras on the DVD) are as intereting as the ones that did. Oh, as for Teddy, well, I cried all day yesterday. Actually, it was a long, drawn out cry-fest from Tuesday through the funeral. I was thinking that it might have been better if he had gone to jail for manslaughter (or whatever the charge would have been) because the truly great stuff he did later in life couldn't be slammed down with "yeah, but he got off easy." He steadfastly stood up for people and causes that could not benefit him at all, unlike most Republicans I have seen in my life (I wonder who will line the streets when Dick Cheney dies - Halliburton employees?) I must admit that Ferris's acrimonious comments shook me a bit. Too bad he wasn't born in time to eulogize Joe McCarthy back in 1957. I did find an old issue in a box of stuff out in the garage recently that had a cover picture of Peter Buck with his arm around a confused-looking Brian Wilson. For my money the big news is Disney's acquisition of Marvel. That has the potential to suck in ways humankind has never imagined before... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2009 20:50:54 EDT From: HwyCDRrev@aol.com Subject: Re: "Abbey Road Now" CD with Robyn Hitchcock "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"; is there any other kind ? my blog is "Yer Blog" http://fab4yerblog.blogspot.com/ http://robotsarestealingmyluggage.blogspot.com/ In a message dated 8/31/2009 8:45:31 P.M. Nor is it really "official data," unless by that you just mean it was written by people who believe in modern medicine. (You understand the difference between primary and secondary sources, right?)> believe me, i tried to find these data on government websites. it's not easy to -- at least not for me. honest to god, i had thought that graphs found in a JAMA article concerning disease trends, and sourced from the national center for health statistics, would not be at all controversial. apologies for not having made that clear. but, i mean, jesus, *you're* the one who works in a library. if you still doubt the accuracy of the data, why not stop by the government publications desk on your lunch-break, and check the citations? you had only said that you doubted the veracity of the original graphs; so i had *not* taken it as given that the dates were agreed upon by everyone in the discussion. but even if so, unless one had the dates committed to memory, one'd need another source to ascertain the effectiveness of vaccination. when i first asked for somebody to tell me how i may be mis-interpreting the graphs, you said that you didn't think they were accurate. now you're saying that even if they are, you disagree with my interpretation. so i feel as though you're changing oars mid-stream, here. but that's a minor quibble. my contention, put forward several times so far, has been that if vaccinations were effective, then their introductions would have *changed the shapes of the respective curves*. you seem to be arguing that had vaccines not been introduced, the rate of decline would've flattened to some extent; and that by sheer coincidence, the vaccines not only took up the slack, but took up precisely the right amount of slack to make the curves' shape essentially un-changed. that's theoretically *possible*, but *exceedingly* unlikely, in my opinion. i agree, of course, that incidence data would be preferable. but it's more less impossible to determine, because we've no idea how many people contracted the diseases without having reported. do we even have *diagnosis* data going back to 1900? maybe in a few large cities, if that. but, i dunno. i'd be more than happy to be corrected on this point, if anybody's got links to incidence data. <> > well, don't blame me for the CDC's folly. a clarification is in order, though. after fielding your question, i did a bit more research, and note that the pre-1956 definition was changed so that the same symptoms were now diagnosed viral meningitis *or* aseptic meningitis, or coxsackie. but the point is the same: following the re-definition, the decrease in polio diagnoses was mirrored by an increase in diagnoses of the other three conditions; but that the pre-1956 data were not retroactively changed. has more info, with citations. for what it's worth, the article was written by a germ-theory-believer-slash-vaccination-opponent. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #236 ********************************
