Even assuming correlation between "age of maturity" and lifespan (I'm no biologist, so...), what kind of maturity do we mean? It's obvious that the complexity of human culture means that we mature physically far sooner than emotionally, psychologically, or for that matter socioculturally. And an interesting byproduct of - among other things - improved public health generally is an earlier onset of puberty...the net result of which is an ever-widening gap between physical maturity (measured simply by biological ability to reproduce) and when people are, culturally, likely to be actually ready or willing to reproduce. (This is why, incidentally, all these celibacy advocates are doomed to lose. Well, one reason, anyway.) Point is, 18 seems way high for maturity - if we mean physical maturity, as defined by ability to reproduce the species. If we set it a few years earlier - 14 or 15 say - then that multiplier of seven puts us nearer 100 years old. And I do think that under ideal living circumstances, people might typically live to be a hundred on average. No culture has achieved that - and of course we keep creating new and clever ways to terminate life soonerish. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 2009 21:16:05 -0400 From: "Stewart C. According to technical spec, you're right that the Xbox and the PS3 piss all over the Wii. But for system design, and overall cohesiveness of gameplay, I'll take the Wii. I used to be a very serious gamer. In fact, I did it for a living. Long before I joined fegmaniax, I was a game reviewer for the UK press. I kinda peaked about 20 years ago, though, and anything beyond what are now so disdainfully called "casual" or "twitch" games have no interest for me. (in fact, my current gaming fave is playing old ZX Spectrum [= Timex] titles on emulation at around 30x their original speed. Games usually last about 15s, and that's several levels.) So everything I've seen and played on Wii makes me happy. For me, it's a much better gaming system. I really don't care all that much about gaming, but I care just enough to have a system, so the Wii is perfect. Family game nights are casual and fun, and if I want to drill down to something more "mature" but not too intense I can do that too. Our faves are Wii Sports, Crash Bandicoot (both of them are great fun), Shawn White Snowboarding, Wii Ski & Snowboard, and Rayman Raving Rabbids. - -tc ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #227 ********************************
