Someone so inclined could probably come up with a formula...but the ideal album length depends upon musical style, prevailing tempos, uh-and at least one other factor I just forgot - but let's put it this way: a 38-minute album of drifty ambient stuff will seem short (to someone who enjoys the genre in the first place) whereas a 38-minute album of barely 60-second-long hardcore super-fast punk will seem pretty long (probably even to a fan of the genre). I suppose you could say something about the amount of sheer musical data* - there's way more in the hardcore than in the ambient, I suppose, and that creates fatigue sooner. I'd say somewhere between 32 minutes or so (for very short, rather fast songs) to about 50 minutes (for longer, slower, less dense songs) is about right. After that, you're pushing it. Bands seem to know this: there's a reason very few Guided by Voices albums are very long, because their songs are short and fragmentary, and too much of that wears out much sooner than, say, Philip Glass. (Obviously, if you don't like whatever the genre of music in the first place, you'll disagree...but I'm talking about optimal length for music one *likes*: optimal length for music one dislikes is zero seconds ;-) * Amusingly, I once saw a sort of post-rock fusion-y act, led by two percussionists if I recall, who opened for Low, during the latter band's slowest of "slowcore" days. I'm pretty sure the one drummer in the opening band hit more drums within the first two songs than Mimi Parker did all night. ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2009 16:04:52 -0400 From: lep Subject: Re: Now playing--In my Head!! I strongly prefer any Rawlings-fronted joint (see also the Esquires, the similar band from a while back) to anything released under the heading "Gillian Welch." Given that Gil and Dave are nice people and that I have opportunity to see them frequently, and sometimes even see them without even trying to see them, I wish I loved all their stuff. Unfortunately, the Gillian Welch stuff always leaves me cold, whereas the Rawlings Machine is straight outta tha garage, and apparently during its rampages has digested my complete record collection. later, Miles On Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 2:15 PM, Jeremy Osner wrote: > http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/announcing-the-big-surprise-tour/ > - -- now with blogspot retsin! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2009 22:42:08 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: Re: Movies: Little Children Sebastian wrote: >Did not like this as much as I'm apparently supposed to. I agree with all you wrote. I *do* enjoy movies that are stylish or even mannered, e.g. Moulin Rouge, but in this case it seemed to me that the movie was trying to be "important", but that the banality of its message was hidden behind its style. I didn't like "American Beauty" either, and to me they seem similar. I never saw AB after watching "Six Feet Under", which I loved for the most part, and I keep wondering how I would think about it now that I'm more familiar with Alan Ball. > i had to dig my brain to recall the ending, but it was a bit over the top.
