there are probably some vague spoilers within.

"moon", on the big screen - i really enjoyed this.  some reviewer
referred to its "existential dread", and that phrase is spot on.  the
story is constructed out of the standard-issue sci-fi blocks: a lonely
astronaut, poor communications with ground control, a 64KB lame-ass
HAL, details that grow into clues, a probably-nefarious corporate
sponsor, but somehow it still worked for me.  and okay, it's 2006, and
anyone who describes a movie with the phrase "<movie x> meets <movie
y>" should be shot, so go ahead and shoot, but: "2001" meets "dead
ringers."  the director, if you haven't heard, is david bowie's son,
who, news to me, goes by duncan jones (as opposed to zowie bowie as he
did circa 1978 when i last checked.)

this movie also has a very small, but extremely bizarre and enjoyable
RH-related moment.

"two lovers", DVD - i rented this because of the good reviews, and
because i'm a fucking fool for dear gwyneth.  it was kind of a
let-down, but it was strange in a way that kept me very interested.
joaquin plays a depressive, living back with his parents, and, like
most depressives living back with their parents, is faced with having
one too many love-interests, specifically the sweet jewish
friend-of-the family, and the troubled, rather hauntingly-beautiful
neighbor girl (guess who gwyneth plays?)  i do have to say that it had
one of the best endings that i've seen in years.

in the trailer on the DVD, it's billed as joaquin phoenix's last
movie.  does anyone know if he finished being all weird yet?  or did
it take?

Some guys out of SFO playing this psycho-grungo stuff that's sort of like,
if you tossed the VU in a blender with the Melvins and Neil Young/Horse in
the Whitten days and early Dinosaur Jr with just a hint of Vanilla Fudge,
and the anti-production values of early REM so it's just all sort of a
blur...that's sort of like what you might get.  Slow, stony drone that
sounds like it was recorded from the house next door.  It's interesting.

no.  i've argued here many times before (so won't rehash): if
lesser-evil-ism is your bag, you'll wanna vote for the repbulicans.  but i
do still think the least-bad situation is when neither party controls both
the exectuive and legislative branches.
