A conversation can morph from on about tetris to one about Kim Gordon's underwear, and another one can contain a thrown-in reference to Euler. To me, that's just like my real life warped conversations - following the threads of a discussion is a weird and wonderful experience (a recent comment in a conversation with Alice: "How did this discussion start... let's see. We were talking about Syd Barrett...and now we're discussing the Mohorovicich Layer - how did we get from there to here?") Oh, and a mini-review: Iron & Wine's new one, "Around the Well" - a double CD with a little bit of filler (could have been pared down from two 45-minute discs to a 75-minute one), but mostly stirling stuff in that creeped-out swamp-folk way they have. Some of the tracks are already among my favourites of the year, though - notably the stunning "Loud as hope" and the vaguely recent-pastoral-Enoesque-song "Kingdom of the animals". That kind of surprised me too -- I like the Doors a lot but yes I know, a lot of people think their music is silly, and I guess my assumption going in would hae been that RH was one of those people. But the band was totally into this song, they put as much soul into it as into "Brenda's Iron Sledge" (which I sort of think it has a lot in common with).
