This is the same retrospective that aired last fall, but re-tooled a little bit (especially the last half hour) and aired the day before Robyn's birthday (this year). There aren't alot of rarities or anything, so it's nothing you haven't heard before. There are a few "verbals" here and there. I did spend quite a bit of time on it, so if you feel like hearing a chronological journey through Robyn's backcatalogue, I feel like I have just the thing for you! http://www.sendspace.com/file/btxhvd - part 1 http://www.sendspace.com/file/eb7t7g - part 2 playlist is at: http://www.anodyneradio.com/2009/03/02/038-happy-birthday-robyn-hitchcock Thanks! BTW, i first heard of herzog after seeing "fast, cheap, and out of control." i mean, this guy makes a bet to each his damn shoe, loses the bet and, indeed, eats the shoe, and makes a film out of it to boot: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081746/ talk about six degrees of crazy (the more i know about herzog, the more it strikes me that it's likely that i actually find his life to be more interesting than his art.) at any rate, here's some of the recent netflix activity: * "bad timing" (director nic roeg) - well, this'll put a kick in your dreary sunday afternoon. i keep wanting to call it a "strange little movie" but both the terms "strange" and "little" seem to downplay my meaning. it's really quite a unique movie, but, then again, it's nicolas roeg. other than saying that i'd definitely recommend it, i think the less said, the better. BTW, two things i did not know, both regarding theresa russell : (1) 1980-era ms. russell - man, what a fucking babe, and (2) turns out ms. russell was actually mrs. nic roeg for quite some time. * "the last wave" (director peter weir) - this has been in the pile for quite some time, probably since the last time i watched "picnic at hanging rock." i have mixed feelings about this one - basically, i loved it until about 3/4s of the way through. and the thing is that usually that's more than enough for me - i'm not goal-oriented enough to bother to care about a bad ending. but i'd still recommend it - it's got that that strong sense of foreboding, haunting the way "picnic at hanging rock" is, although much darker. and even more intriguing is the way in which it plays out a sort of a feeling of living mystery -- as though, at its heart, is the conviction that the past is, at best, a rather shallow grave. the following two ended up here via "a pervert's guide to cinema" (which, turns out to be, itself, the Best Movie Ever) * "in the cut" (director: jane campion) - this must have gone on and off my netQ about 15 times since 2003. i have to say that i enjoyed this quite a bit. it's a fairly standard-issue hollywood thriller, but has a bit more going for it. the film itself has this lovely saturation that really drew me in - it reminded me a bit of those polaroid transfers where the focus is off, just barely, and the colours distorted - the reds and greens pop out, and the dull colours sort of just wash out and fade more into the background. fairly bad ending, but no suprise there. other perks were jennifer jason leigh in a supporting role, and a great racy scene between meg ryan and mark ruffalo's characters. ms. ryan was really very good in this, and i very much liked her character - a bit of a dreamy observer that is difficult to pin down. the reviews were rough on this one. ISTR there was some sort of anti-meg sentiments floating about at the time the movie came out...i can't remember if this was perhaps around the time ms. ryan was being sidetracked by russell crowe? or maybe it was just the confusion of ms. ryan's G-rated fanbase being all mystified at the sight of her naked ass all over the big screen? * "solaris" (director: tarkovsky) - this put me to sleep in about ten different ways. which makes it sounds way more boring than it is. it's actually lovely, and hypnotic (hence the sleep) and gets at some ideas that i could spend the rest of my life thinking about. this was, oddly, the first tarkovsky movie i've seen - another case of movies having gone on and off the netQ with high frequency (i think the movie that kept coming and going in tarkovsky's case was "the sacrifice".) i saw the remake of "solaris" in the theatre when it when it came out. this is not the same movie. at all. i have "stalker" here as well, which i started watching, and promptly fell asleep. the decay is breathtaking. and, needless to mention, hypnotic. if i ever stay awake until the end, i'll report back. as ever, lauren - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 12:54:34 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: movie talk - --On 17. I *love* that film. I discovered it late one night on TV (in German of course). Art Garfunkel was what got me in the first place, but Theresa Russell was what kept me. Man, she's just crazy hot. Harvey Keitel has a rather untypical role a a police officer. I haven't seen it again since then. It wasn't available on DVD at all when I looked before, but now I see that it's at least available in England. > * "in the cut" (director: jane campion) - this must have gone on and > off my netQ about 15 times since 2003. i have to say that i enjoyed > this quite a bit. it's a fairly standard-issue hollywood thriller, > but has a bit more going for it. the film itself has this lovely > saturation that really drew me in - it reminded me a bit of those > polaroid transfers where the focus is off, just barely, and the > colours distorted - the reds and greens pop out, and the dull colours > sort of just wash out and fade more into the background. fairly bad > ending, but no suprise there. other perks were jennifer jason leigh > in a supporting role, and a great racy scene between meg ryan and mark > ruffalo's characters. ms. ryan was really very good in this, and i > very much liked her character - a bit of a dreamy observer that is > difficult to pin down. > > the reviews were rough on this one. I've seen that in the theater, but I don't remember very much. It wasn't what I would've expected from either Campion or Ryan. It's got a 5.2 rating on IMDb, pretty abysmal. I gave it a 7, which sounds about right. > * "solaris" (director: tarkovsky) - this put me to sleep in about ten > different ways. which makes it sounds way more boring than it is. I like Tarkovsky, but I never liked Solaris all that much, be it as novel or in either of its movie incarnations. Somehow the main conceit never really impressed me. > i have "stalker" here as well, which i started watching, and promptly > fell asleep. the decay is breathtaking. and, needless to mention, > hypnotic. if i ever stay awake until the end, i'll report back. I've seen it only once (again, in a theater), but I really liked it. Reading the novel helped me make some sense of it, but even if you don't understand it, it's very mesmerizing and a great trip. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 10:40:44 EDT From: HwyCDRrev@aol.com Subject: Elvis Costello Hosts Elvis Costello Performs Tonight 8:00 pm ET Elvis Costello Hosts Elvis Costello Performs Tonight 8:00 pm ET Elvis Costello has never been an artist whobs settled for the status quo and this week he challenges himself again as he hosts an exclusive, hour-long special that delves into his new album Secret, Profane, and Sugarcane and performs a few songs, including one thatbs never been released before.
