There's a quote placed atop one of the pages saying. "He reminds me of a more psychedelic Ray Davies. If he'd been born eight years earlier he'd be legendary." That opinion is debatable. It is attributed to Peter Buck of REM, and current member of Hitchcock's backing band, The Venus Three. I went to see Hitchcock and The Venus Three on thursday night in brooklyn. A good, solid show. When they came out for the encore, Robyn dedicated the song they were about to play to his girlfriend, Michele, saying that he hopes she sees it on You Tube. The band then broke into the opening descending notes of Waterloo Sunset. Opening act Ken Stringfellow joined in on the harmonies. The crowd loved it. Sadly, the next song they played was a cover of Roadhouse Blues by The Doors. my blog is "Yer Blog" http://fab4yerblog.blogspot.com/ http://robotsarestealingmyluggage.blogspot.com/ **************Download the AOL Classifieds Toolbar for local deals at your fingertips. About the time MV went off the air, Letterman did one of his awesome "bookmobile" segments and showed off a copy of Phillip Michael Thomas's new memoir, "Well, You've Pretty Much Seen the Last of Me". That phrase really stuck in my family and was used anytime a minor star did something to make themselves fall off the map of fame in a permanent way. I'm late in responding, but for me, this was one of the top 3 Hitchcock shows I've seen, the other two being the Soft Boys reunion at Bowery Ballroom, and the first Venus 3 show at Knitting Factory a few years ago. Such an up tempo night. Jonlyn and I got there early and hung out with Allen, LJ, her friend in from MO (damn, can't remember his name - Trevor? I recall it started with a T) and Scary Mary. And then Tim Reed (Reid?) and Alison arrived. And lo and behold, Ken Weingold, who I've only had the pleasure of chatting with via iChat (he always mistakes me for Tom Clark when asking all those Apple questions... ;) We saw Robyn and the gang out front just before 8pm hopping in a gypsy cab (I made a joke about Robyn filming a new commercial, where there's a guy screaming for a cab "TAAAAXIIIIII" while the camera zooms into his mouth - it went over well with the locals) and took off for what we assumed was dinner, as they weren't going on until 10:30pm. I was kicking myself big time as LJ recalled the previous nights Decemberists show, as I had offers for tix to that show AND the Elvis Costello show at the Beacon. argh. I decided not to attend either to cancel each other out (though I REALLY wanted to see Hazards of Love performed live in its entirety) and simply enjoy the fact that I was seeing Robyn for only $20/tix on Thursday night. In conclusion - don't miss Robyn and the V3 this time round! - -Steve p.s. Uh, not. While I wouldn't endorse every Kim vocal, I usually don't have a problem with her singing. Plus there are lots of songs where she's not singing, so it's not like you have to listen to 72 minutes of Kim or anything. For me, it was usually in the right proportion, though anecdotally it did seem like there was a point in the '90s where there was Too Much Kim, but I don't know if that diagnosis would hold up if I listened to those albums again. - my perception might have been distorted by the "emphasis tracks" on college radio and 120 Minutes being Kim-heavy. later, Miles - -- now with blogspot retsin! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #172 ********************************
