These quotes are from the Decemberists message board in reference to last night's show where the Venus 3 was opening: "I'm sorry to say it but I do not like Robyn Hitchcock at all... he seemed kinda into himself. And it looked like Peter Buck was ashamed to be playing with him hahah." "Yeah, Hitchcock wasn't doing it for me. What I also didn't get was why there was so much laughter at what he said. it was nonsensical. Plus, is his singing intentionally garbled, or was the sound just whacked out for his set?" "I didn't think Hitchcock was that great, though I did sort of enjoy the last song they played, "Goodnight Oslo." I think the laughter was just due to the fact that whatever he said was kind of absurd, and no one knew how to react but laugh." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Jun 2009 18:09:09 -0400 From: "Stewart C. Wow. Would you talk to my family? To continue on the Herzog theme, I was living in Germany at the time that he and Wim Wenders were becoming very popular (Kaspar Hauser and Kings of the Road - aka Im Lauf der Zeit were huge), so they are a large part of my Germany chapter. Their movies were amongst the first that I saw and actually understood (the language, not necessarily the greater meaning), so I've more or less followed both their careers. As for Wim Wenders, I even have a really bad copy of his first film called Summer in the City (it takes place in winter - go figure), the soundtrack of which is composed exclusively of Kinks songs. Stewart, what is "this"? I've never seen it/heard it before. Is it like "word" or "what he said"? I'm so behind the times. We haven't even seen Wall-E yet. I'm not sure why I personally never saw one by Herzog until now, since I have seen quite a few by the others I mentioned. I must say that I've never really been a fan of any (contemporary) German director until Tom Tykwer. NB: The ones I name above peaked when I was too young. These are the (noteworthy) German directors I grew up with: Detlev Buck was great initially, but his later films were mostly disappointments. SC6nke Wortmann made one great movie (Kleine Haie), but it went straight downhill from there. Dani Levy is probably the most consistent one of his generation, but he's technically not German, as he was born in Basel (Switzerland). The older directors, summed up as "Der neue deutsche Film", impressed me when I discovered them, but I can't say I ever loved them. "Wings Of Desire" is great, but even that is marred by the interminal monologue at the end. Other Wenders movies were fascinating experiments (Im Lauf der Zeit, Der Stand der Dinge, Der amerikanische Freund), but I wouldn't say I loved or even liked them. I saw Until The End Of The World in the theater version, which was either too short or too long. I've got the full version in my queue and am looking forward to that. Fassbinder is once again impressive, but it's not really my thing. It's been ages since I've seen them, but in my memory they are too pessimistic for my taste - generally a quality of 1970s German films ... I've seen the following, IIRC: Warum lC$uft Herr R. Amok? (my father loved that one) Angst essen Seele auf Effi Briest Die Ehe der Maria Braun Berlin Alexanderplatz Lili Marleen > My first two Herzog movies were Kaspar Hauser:jeder fuer sich > und Gott gegen alle and Stroszek. Turns out she and my brother-in-law are attending tonight's Decemberists/Robyn show. I'm 99.9% sure that what little they know about Robyn comes from me, and they're going strictly for the Decemberists. Should be interesting to hear what she has to say, in comparison to the recently-posted Decemberist fan grousing. And for further context, while my brother-in-law's tastes are healthily eclectic, his primary musical love is the Dave Matthews Band, so, again, their report should be from some different perspectives than we're used to hearing in Fegville. And just in case anyone forgot: no, I don't like the Decemberists at all. They're one of dozens of acts from the last 15 years that I have filed under the heading of "Fully Expected To Love. Didn't." later, Miles p.s.: I owe some of youse offlist mail (one o' youse in particular); I'm off work tomorrow, so... I could catch up!
