Less fancily, there are a bunch of UPNP network storage devices available for cheap - hey, even my Linksys router will serve an HD full of digital media. I don't really like the way UPNP works with my SoundBridges. In software, there's SqueezeServer for the Logitech boxes, or Firefly for Roku ones. I'm in the process of getting Firefly working on a tiny server - a Sheevaplug, as if you cared, and serving its playlist through a service like Simplify Media. Oh, and Lauren: > is that an actual random playlist or a pseudo-random playlist? My random podcast selects tracks using an entropy-based RNG ... so yeah, pretty random. Looks like Stewart's handled the serious side of this conversation, so I'll just chime in to ask: How long is that cable? I wouldn't count on any data reliably getting through from a USB mass storage device if the cable were longer than 20 feet or so. The bits...they get tired. Short enough, I guess: everything works fine. Probably ten feet. If not for walls and floors, the drive would be within arm's reach of me. It just has to dip slightly due to the damned floor. If I *did* have problem, there's a slightly more direct, if unsightly, route. But as I said, I've had no problems at all with it so far. Damned cats. Wondered if perhaps I could suggest an impromptu feg lunch on Thursday (my conference begins Thursday late afternoon). I'm staying somewhere in southwest Philly (don't know the neighborhood but close to the subway/transit) and know a few neighborhoods, mostly downtown/chinatown and the Italian Market, where I lived while in grad school, and a little bit in the Northern Liberties (I used to go to that cool diner over there). Indeed - now they just have to ditch the number, which is oh-so-very-1999, and redolent of a zillion very bad bands from that era. "Vanilla" by itself doesn't work, though. For my stuff the file is comparatively small at about 5.7K for a 135+GB library. The updating of the library took less than a minute on my PC, but it's a relatively dual processor with 4GB of RAM. My masochism kicked in and I synced my Touch afterwards as I'd read of freezes but all appears to have worked all right. After that I purchased the new Camera Obscura disc as they're playing here in a couple of weeks and was curious if I could go 3-for-3. Seems like it worked, too.
